The Grand Center Architecture and History Walking Tour
provides a fascinating look into the District's magnificent buildings, rich history, dynamic neighborhood, and vibrant arts culture. The free
1.5-mile tour will take walkers on a journey back in time, supported by a richly detailed narrated history, as well as provide a glimpse of the exciting plans for the future. Tours start in Strauss Park at the intersection of Grand and Washington.
Upcoming Tours: September and October 2016
Saturdays, September 10 - October 29, 10 a.m. - noon
The tour is approximately 1.5 miles. The group walks south on Grand to Olive, west on Olive to Spring, north on Spring to Washington, east on Washington for 1/2 block, north across the parking lot to Grandel Square, east on Grandel Square to Grand, and south on Grand to Washington. Tour groups go inside the Contemporary Art Museum and the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts unless the museums are changing exhibits, plus one additional stop that varies each week.
Parking is available in a gated lot on Washington just east of Third Baptist Church (at the intersection of Grand and Washington) or the gated Powell Hall lot on Samuel Shepard. Both lots have coin and dollar acceptor boxes. Parking at both lots is $2 (they only accept $10 bills or smaller). Meter parking is also available; however, the time limit on the meters closest to Grand is 90 minutes. We recommend using one of the 4-hour meters if meter parking is desired. Meters are 75 cents per hour.
Tours are generally accessible and are available for special needs individuals by request.
There is no fee for the tour. Grand Center, Inc. is a non-profit and donations cover the cost of the tours. The tours are sponsored by the Art and Life Alliance
, a women's giving circle that supports the mission of Grand Center, Inc. Participants are welcome to make a tax deductible donation for the tour or to support the work of Grand Center, Inc. At the end of the tour, participants will receive a package that includes a donation form that is part of a Comment Card along with a Business Reply Envelope. The packet also has a number of coupons to area restaurants and information about upcoming Grand Center events.
