SUMMARY:Legacy: Selections from the Gerald R. and Mary Reid Brunstrom Gift of Art from Australia
DESCRIPTION:From 1988 to 2000\, St. Louis art lovers frequented the Austral Gallery in Lafayette Square. Guided by the vision of founder Mary Reid Brunstrom with the unwavering support of her late husband Jerry\, Austral Gallery brought some of the most significant Australian voices in contemporary art to St. Louis and contributed to a growing awareness in North America of Australian Aboriginal art. \nBrunstrom played a key role in organizing two MOCRA exhibitions: in 1995\, Ian Friend: The Edge of Belief – paintings\, sculpture\, and works on paper\, 1980–1994\, and in 1997\, Utopia Body Paint Collection and Australian Aboriginal Art from St. Louis Collections. \nIn 2024\, Brunstrom donated a major body of works by both Aboriginal and non-Indigenous Australian artists to MOCRA and the Saint Louis University Museum of Art\, greatly enhancing both museums’ collections. MOCRA is pleased to present a selection of works from this gift and celebrate the lasting contribution of Jerry and Mary Brunstrom to the cultural fabric of St. Louis.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy art\, music\, and culture in the Grand Center Arts District on the first Friday of the month. This event celebrates Great Rivers Biennial 2024 artist Saj Issa and traditional Palestinian cultural forms that relate to the artist’s exhibition. \nSchedule \n\n5:00 pm Drinks and specialty cocktails available for purchase from AO&Co\n6:00–7:30pm Hands-on art making exploring tatreez\, a form of traditional Palestinian embroidery\, led by Saj Issa\n7:30 pm Oud performance by Ronnie Malley\n\n  \n\nAbout the artists \nSaj Issa (she/her) received a BFA from Webster University\, St. Louis\, and a MFA at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Growing up between St. Louis and Ramallah\, Palestine\, her practice is an exploration of displacement\, identity\, social issues\, and consumerism. Issa provokes\, informs\, and entertains viewers with her work\, which has been exhibited at Felix Art Fair in Los Angeles\, Materials Fair in Mexico City\, the exhibition Many at the Craft Contemporary Museum\, Los Angeles\, and most recently\, Your Refuge installed on the exterior of The Luminary as a part of psa-stl. Issa is a recipient of the 2022 NCECA Graduate Student Fellowship\, and has been selected to appear in New American Paintings\, No. 159 & 165 MFA Annual Issue. She has been an artist-in-residence at Craft Alliance Center of Art and Design\, St. Louis\, and Belger Crane Yard Studio\, Kansas City. \nRonnie Malley (he/him) is a multi-instrumentalist musician on oud\, guitar\, keyboards\, and percussion\, a theatrical performer\, producer\, and educator. He has collaborated with international artists\, composed and consulted for many cultural music projects in film and theater\, appeared as a guest artist on several works\, and is executive director of Intercultural Music Production in Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Melandri\, CAM Executive Director and co-organizer of the exhibition Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay\, for a conversation with Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy\, curator\, writer\, and arts administrator who wrote a scholarly essay for the exhibition’s accompanying publication. The two will discuss Sawada’s singular sculptures and the various avenues for appreciating and contextualizing his work. \nAs part of the evening\, Artists First\, an inclusive\, non-profit art studio\, will showcase works of art created in response to Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay. Artists First empowers artists of all abilities and uses creative self-expression to build equity\, equality\, and empowerment in the Saint Louis region and beyond. Artists from Artists First took inspiration from Shinichi Sawada’s exhibition and created multimedia artworks in response. The multimedia sculptures represent the beauty of diversity and inclusion. Doors open at 5:30 pm. \n  \n\nAbout the speakers \nAngelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy (she/her) is a New York-based curator\, writer\, art historian\, and arts and grants administrator. Her practice advocates for underrepresented communities\, stories\, materials\, and approaches in the art world. Her research investigates the “aesthetics of optimism\,” the subversive power of humor\, cuteness\, and leisure as tools of protest. She is the Director of the New York City Department of Transportation Art (NYC DOT Art). Vizcarrondo-Laboy also served as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD\,) NY\, where from 2016 to 2022\, she was part of MAD’s curatorial team\, helping organize over twenty exhibitions and projects. During her time there\, she also led MAD’s Burke Prize\, a prestigious contemporary craft award. Vizcarrondo-Laboy authored the essay “Shinichi Sawada: An Open-Ended Question” for the exhibition catalog Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay. \nLisa Melandri (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis\, the region’s premier contemporary\, non-collecting art institution. Since joining CAM in 2012\, Lisa has brought both emerging and established artists from around the globe to St. Louis\, and has organized such outstanding exhibitions at CAM as Mickalene Thomas: Mentors\, Muses\, and Celebrities; Salvatore Scarpitta: Racing Cars; Sanford Biggers; Amy Sherald; Christine Corday: RELATIVE POINTS; and Kathy Butterly: Out of one\, many / Headscapes. Melandri co-organized the exhibition Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay with Jen Sudul Edwards\, Ph.D.\, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at The Mint Museum.

DESCRIPTION:In a new dance and sculptural performance\, Brendan Fernandes: In Two presents a series of duets performed throughout the galleries. Responding directly to Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, the dancers engage with Burton’s “furniture sculptures”—artworks that were originally made for public use. Like Burton (1939–1989)\, Fernandes draws on gestures and signaling within gay cruising culture as part of an ongoing exploration of queer camouflage\, visibility\, and embodiment. In addition to engaging with Burton’s artwork\, dancers also activate two newly-commissioned sets of curtains installed in the upper and lower levels of the Pulitzer’s main gallery and a set of pillows that softly contrast with the hard materials of Burton’s work. \nTaking place in our upper level and lower main galleries at noon and 2 pm\, these performances last around one hour and are free and open to the public. You are welcome to drop in at any time and stay for as long as you’d like. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of our fall exhibitions\, Scott Burton: Shape Shift and Brendan Fernandes: In Two. \nAmerican artist Scott Burton (1939–1989) made what he described as “sculpture in love with furniture.” Scott Burton: Shape Shift includes over forty artworks focusing on the artist’s use of furniture and performance to express identity and explore social dynamics\, such as intimacy\, distance\, collectivity\, and isolation. In addition to the artist’s sculptures\, photographs\, drawings\, and documentation of performances\, Scott Burton: Shape Shift also sheds light on the artist’s contributions to conceptual art\, public art\, and queer art\, as well as his roles as a curator and art critic. \nBrendan Fernandes: In Two is a new sculpture and performance work by Chicago-based artist Brendan Fernandes (b. 1979\, Kenya). Organized in response to Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, Fernandes has choreographed a series of duets that engage with Burton’s “furniture sculptures”—artworks that were originally made for public use. Like Burton\, Fernandes draws on gestures and signaling within gay cruising culture as part of an ongoing exploration of queer camouflage\, visibility\, and embodiment.
