SUMMARY:Anthropocene: The Human Epoch
DESCRIPTION:A stunning sensory experience and cinematic meditation on humanity’s massive reengineering of the planet\, Anthropocene: The Human Epoch is a years-in-the-making feature documentary from the award-winning team behind Manufactured Landscapes (2006) and Watermark (2013) and narrated by Alicia Vikander. The film follows the research of an international body of scientists\, the Anthropocene Working Group who\, after nearly 10 years of research\, argue that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century as a result of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth. \nFrom concrete seawalls in China that now cover 60% of the mainland coast\, to the biggest terrestrial machines ever built in Germany\, to psychedelic potash mines in Russia’s Ural Mountains\, to metal festivals in the closed city of Norilsk\, to the devastated Great Barrier Reef in Australia and massive marble quarries in Carrara\, the filmmakers have traversed the globe using state of the art camera techniques to document the evidence and experience of human planetary domination. At the intersection of art and science\, Anthropocene witnesses a critical moment in geological history — bringing a provocative and unforgettable experience of our species’s breadth and impact. \nReleased 2018\, 87 Minutes\, Not Rated

SUMMARY:SNCC - A Film By Danny Lyon
DESCRIPTION:Danny Lyon’s SNCC (2020)\, brings together hundreds of never-before-seen black-and-white photographs made by Lyon during the years that he was employed as the staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee\, or SNCC. Beginning in 1962 in Cairo\, Illinois when Lyon\, then a University of Chicago student\, met John Lewis\, Freedom Rider\, the film traces the story of their friendship alongside the ongoing struggle for civil rights in the United States. The images are layered with archival audio recordings of speeches by and conversations with Lewis\, Julian Bond\, and Dotty Zellner\, among others\, as well as freedom songs that were recorded by Alan Ribback in churches and meetings in Atlanta in the 1960s and recently rediscovered by Lyon. \nReleased 2020\, 74 Minutes\, Not Rated

SUMMARY:Strand: Under the Dark Cloth
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Work of IPHF Inductee Paul Strand \nSaturday\, December 3\, 2022\n1-2:30 pm CST At IPHF\n3415 Olive St\, St. Louis\, MO \nAlthough his influence on the history of photography has been nothing short of profound\, Paul Strand (1890-1976) remains a curiously shrouded and paradoxical figure. While passionately devoted to humanity\, he was happiest in the isolation of the dark room. A pioneer filmmaker (Manhattan\, Native Land\, Heart of Spain\, The Wave)\, he found the process of collaboration painful. Strand established himself in New York in the 1920’s as a master of light and structure\, with his now famous photo of Wall Street inspired by the forms and movement of European modernist painters such as Matisse and Picasso. His closeup portraits and landscapes were equally profound. John Walker’s Strand: Under the Dark Cloth is a documentary that is “beautifully crafted\, thoroughly researched and intimately recounted” (Variety) with generous amounts of Strand’s most famous photographs\, clips from his films and fascinating interviews with friends and collaborators. \nReleased 2002\, Runtime: 81 min\, Not Rated \nThis is an In Person event at the International Photography Hall of Fame \nAdmission: Free. Registration Required.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Where is the Friend’s House?
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Abbas Kiarostami\, Iran\, 1987\, 87 minutes \nThe first in Abbas Kiarostami’s sublime\, interlacing trilogy of films set in the northern Iranian village of Koker\, Where is the Friend’s House? takes a premise of fable-like simplicity—a boy searches for the home of his classmate whose school notebook he has accidentally taken—and transforms this simple narrative into a miraculous\, child’s-eye adventure of the everyday. As the young hero zigzags determinedly across two towns aided (and sometimes misdirected) by those he encounters\, his quest becomes both a revealing portrait of Iranian society in all its richness and complexity and a touching parable about the meaning of personal responsibility. Shot through with all the wonder\, beauty\, tension\, and mystery one day can contain\, Where is the Friend’s House? established Kiarostami’s reputation as one cinema’s most sensitive and profound humanists. The film was selected by artist Farah Al Qasimi as an accompaniment to Everywhere there is splendor her newly commissioned\, photo-based installation across CAM’s Project Wall. She selected the film because it “speaks to the way that children form their own moral codes and senses of responsibility in a beautiful and sensitive way.” \nCo-presented with the Cinema St. Louis as part of the 30th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Archipelago
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Felix Dufour-Laperrière\, Canada\, 2020\, 71 min. \nThe animated essay film Archipelago is partly documentary but mostly fiction\, although poetry may be the best comparison. The film is an abstract meditation on Québec\, the St. Lawrence River\, and the waterway’s islands. Formally ambitious and undeniably accomplished\, Archipelago has a distinct avant-garde sensibility and employs a diverse array of graphic approaches as it unfolds. Sight & Sound describes Archipelago as “a freewheeling showcase of 12 animators deploying wildly different styles to evoke myriad moods\, images and sensations connected\, directly or tangentially\, with Québec. Animation techniques overlap with live-action footage amid hallucinatory swirls of on-screen hand-written text; old maps\, photographs and films—most prominently a 1941 newsreel-style reportage—are presented\, augmented\, rotoscoped and distorted; the concrete morphs into the impressionistic.” A discussion will be held after the screening with Colin Burnett\, Associate Professor of Film & Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. \nCo-presented with Cinema St. Louis as part of the 30th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival. A virtual screening on demand will be available through Cinema St. Louis.
