While passionately devoted to humanity\, he was happiest in the isolation of the dark room. A pioneer filmmaker (Manhattan\, Native Land\, Heart of Spain\, The Wave)\, he found the process of collaboration painful. Strand established himself in New York in the 1920’s as a master of light and structure\, with his now famous photo of Wall Street inspired by the forms and movement of European modernist painters such as Matisse and Picasso. His closeup portraits and landscapes were equally profound. Shot through with all the wonder\, beauty\, tension\, and mystery one day can contain\, Where is the Friend’s House? established Kiarostami’s reputation as one cinema’s most sensitive and profound humanists. The film was selected by artist Farah Al Qasimi as an accompaniment to Everywhere there is splendor her newly commissioned\, photo-based installation across CAM’s Project Wall. The film is an abstract meditation on Québec\, the St. Lawrence River\, and the waterway’s islands. Formally ambitious and undeniably accomplished\, Archipelago has a distinct avant-garde sensibility and employs a diverse array of graphic approaches as it unfolds. Sight & Sound describes Archipelago as “a freewheeling showcase of 12 animators deploying wildly different styles to evoke myriad moods\, images and sensations connected\, directly or tangentially\, with Québec. Animation techniques overlap with live-action footage amid hallucinatory swirls of on-screen hand-written text; old maps\, photographs and films—most prominently a 1941 newsreel-style reportage—are presented\, augmented\, rotoscoped and distorted; the concrete morphs into the impressionistic.” A discussion will be held after the screening with Colin Burnett\, Associate Professor of Film & Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. \nCo-presented with Cinema St. Louis as part of the 30th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival. DESCRIPTION:The 29th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) wrapped on Nov. 22\, 2020\, but Cinema St. Louis is providing cinephiles another opportunity to view the event’s award winners in the Best of Fest\, which is available virtually from Jan. 22-31\, 2021. \nA few of SLIFF’s honorees are already or imminently out in the world — “Transhood” is available on HBO Max\, and “9to5: The Story of a Movement” premieres on PBS’s “Independent Lens” on Feb. 1 — but we’re pleased to reprise the other 19 winners of our juried and audience-choice awards. \nLike 2020’s SLIFF\, the Best of Fest is an online-only event and is again presented with our virtual-festival partner\, Eventive. Nine features and a program of 10 shorts will be available to stream during all 10 days of the event\, and several of the films will once more include recorded Q&As with filmmakers and documentary subjects. (SLIFF Q&As and master classes are also available for free on our YouTube channel.) \nGeographic restrictions will apply to some films. Can Jack turn things around to save his village? \nDirected by Jamie McKittrick\, Jacked! fuses storytelling and poetry with nonstop hip-hop and break-beat music by Jackie “Jackpot” Sharp in this fresh\, energetic virtual production that uses hand-drawn animation based on visuals by artist Nick Kryah. Jacked! explores the imaginative boundaries of theater\, film\, and animation and inside the story and the music is an age-appropriate message for children about substance abuse and its effects on our communities. \nThe cast includes St. Louis hip hop duo The Knuckles and MTC favorite Jarris L. Williams (last seen playing the title role in Ghost). \nJacked! was originally commissioned by Cleveland Play House and developed as part of Cleveland Play House’s Classroom Matinee Touring Program with a soundtrack by Rhythm Science Sound. \nFor ages 5 to 11. The Riverfront Times\, which says the group “aims to make every show a surreal circus experience\,” writes: “The Opera Bell Band likes to inject equal parts whiz-bang silliness and running-gag callbacks in its set. (Band member Shane) Devine and his multi-instrumentalist bandmates — Jess Adkins\, Jake Everett\, Kristina DeYong and Grant Martin — look more like a raggedy vaudevillian troupe than a band\, and its charmingly antiquated folk songs seem to come from some imagined past\, populated by jazzy 7th chords\, twinkly xylophones and seemingly nonsensical lyrics about produce.”

Recommended for adults and ages 8+. \nAnd In This Corner: Cassius Clay is the story of the young man who would become Muhammad Ali. From his relationship with a white police officer who introduced him to boxing as a kid in Jim Crow-era Louisville to his gold medal-winning performance in the 1960 Rome Olympics\, Cassius holds onto the faith that his potential is unlimited. But it is the friends from his childhood who are becoming Freedom Riders who ultimately challenge him to understand that there is more to life than personal success: he must use his gifts to work for the good of his community. \nThe play was a hit of the 2015-16 theater season and generated numerous accolades for Metro Theater Company\, including the Network for Strong Communities’ prestigious Paulie Award for creating positive change through collaborative nonprofit partnerships.
