SUMMARY:Jacked!
DESCRIPTION:Jacked!\nBy Idris Goodwin\nwith soundtrack by Jackie “Jackpot” Sharp\nJan 21 thru May 31\, 2021 (virtual performances) \nIt’s Jack and the Beanstalk with a modern-day twist. In this reimagined world\, Jack and his mother struggle to live happily ever after. When his farm can’t feed him\, his community can’t support him\, and his mother can’t take care of him\, Jack takes matters into his own hands. After climbing the beanstalk and stealing the giant’s goose\, Jack flees home and discovers the goose’s golden eggs have a mysterious\, intoxicating power that turns his world upside down. How can something so good make everything bad? Can Jack turn things around to save his village? \nDirected by Jamie McKittrick\, Jacked! fuses storytelling and poetry with nonstop hip-hop and break-beat music by Jackie “Jackpot” Sharp in this fresh\, energetic virtual production that uses hand-drawn animation based on visuals by artist Nick Kryah. Jacked! explores the imaginative boundaries of theater\, film\, and animation and inside the story and the music is an age-appropriate message for children about substance abuse and its effects on our communities. \nThe cast includes St. Louis hip hop duo The Knuckles and MTC favorite Jarris L. Williams (last seen playing the title role in Ghost). \nJacked! was originally commissioned by Cleveland Play House and developed as part of Cleveland Play House’s Classroom Matinee Touring Program with a soundtrack by Rhythm Science Sound. \nFor ages 5 to 11. The performance is approximately 40 minutes with no intermission.

SUMMARY:Rawstock
DESCRIPTION:This celebration of the educational films of yesteryear — a co-presentation with Washington University Libraries’ Film & Media Archive — makes its fifth consecutive appearance at SLIFF. Settle in with friends for a relaxing night of drinks\, kitsch\, and nostalgia. The films are all projected in old-fashioned 16mm using prints that were once shown in classrooms across the St. Louis area. As always\, the archive has uncovered some new delights\, and this year’s selections provide invaluable tips and tricks for optimal self-care\, such as avoiding lice and improving penmanship. When not sharing selections from its vast trove of 16mm educational films\, the Film & Media Archive serves as a nationally recognized center for scholarship\, teaching\, and learning.

SUMMARY:The Opera Bell Band with Narrative Shorts
DESCRIPTION:This evening of seven shorts — all with a musical component — is capped by a performance by the Opera Bell Band\, whose whimsical stop-motion-animated film “Green Lemon Buggy” is featured in the program. The Riverfront Times\, which says the group “aims to make every show a surreal circus experience\,” writes: “The Opera Bell Band likes to inject equal parts whiz-bang silliness and running-gag callbacks in its set. (Band member Shane) Devine and his multi-instrumentalist bandmates — Jess Adkins\, Jake Everett\, Kristina DeYong and Grant Martin — look more like a raggedy vaudevillian troupe than a band\, and its charmingly antiquated folk songs seem to come from some imagined past\, populated by jazzy 7th chords\, twinkly xylophones and seemingly nonsensical lyrics about produce.”

SUMMARY:And In This Corner: Cassius Clay
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy this pay-what-you-can viewing of And In This Corner: Cassius Clay by Idris Goodwin\, in partnership with HEC Media. Approximate run time is 70 minutes. Recommended for adults and ages 8+. \nAnd In This Corner: Cassius Clay is the story of the young man who would become Muhammad Ali. From his relationship with a white police officer who introduced him to boxing as a kid in Jim Crow-era Louisville to his gold medal-winning performance in the 1960 Rome Olympics\, Cassius holds onto the faith that his potential is unlimited. But it is the friends from his childhood who are becoming Freedom Riders who ultimately challenge him to understand that there is more to life than personal success: he must use his gifts to work for the good of his community. \nThe play was a hit of the 2015-16 theater season and generated numerous accolades for Metro Theater Company\, including the Network for Strong Communities’ prestigious Paulie Award for creating positive change through collaborative nonprofit partnerships. Led by Trigney Morgan as Cassius Clay between the ages of 11 and 20\, the play was celebrated by the St. Louis American for its “authentic chemistry among the cast” and its potential to encourage audiences “to channel their inner champion and fight for what’s right.” \nPrice: Pay what you can
