This event celebrates Great Rivers Biennial 2024 artist Saj Issa and traditional Palestinian cultural forms that relate to the artist’s exhibition. \nSchedule \n\n5:00 pm Drinks and specialty cocktails available for purchase from AO&Co\n6:00–7:30pm Hands-on art making exploring tatreez\, a form of traditional Palestinian embroidery\, led by Saj Issa\n7:30 pm Oud performance by Ronnie Malley\n\n  \n\nAbout the artists \nSaj Issa (she/her) received a BFA from Webster University\, St. Louis\, and a MFA at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Growing up between St. Louis and Ramallah\, Palestine\, her practice is an exploration of displacement\, identity\, social issues\, and consumerism. Issa provokes\, informs\, and entertains viewers with her work\, which has been exhibited at Felix Art Fair in Los Angeles\, Materials Fair in Mexico City\, the exhibition Many at the Craft Contemporary Museum\, Los Angeles\, and most recently\, Your Refuge installed on the exterior of The Luminary as a part of psa-stl. Issa is a recipient of the 2022 NCECA Graduate Student Fellowship\, and has been selected to appear in New American Paintings\, No. 159 & 165 MFA Annual Issue. She has been an artist-in-residence at Craft Alliance Center of Art and Design\, St. Louis\, and Belger Crane Yard Studio\, Kansas City. \nRonnie Malley (he/him) is a multi-instrumentalist musician on oud\, guitar\, keyboards\, and percussion\, a theatrical performer\, producer\, and educator. He has collaborated with international artists\, composed and consulted for many cultural music projects in film and theater\, appeared as a guest artist on several works\, and is executive director of Intercultural Music Production in Chicago.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Fall Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of our fall exhibitions\, Scott Burton: Shape Shift and Brendan Fernandes: In Two. \nAmerican artist Scott Burton (1939–1989) made what he described as “sculpture in love with furniture.” Scott Burton: Shape Shift includes over forty artworks focusing on the artist’s use of furniture and performance to express identity and explore social dynamics\, such as intimacy\, distance\, collectivity\, and isolation. In addition to the artist’s sculptures\, photographs\, drawings\, and documentation of performances\, Scott Burton: Shape Shift also sheds light on the artist’s contributions to conceptual art\, public art\, and queer art\, as well as his roles as a curator and art critic. \nBrendan Fernandes: In Two is a new sculpture and performance work by Chicago-based artist Brendan Fernandes (b. 1979\, Kenya). Organized in response to Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, Fernandes has choreographed a series of duets that engage with Burton’s “furniture sculptures”—artworks that were originally made for public use. Like Burton\, Fernandes draws on gestures and signaling within gay cruising culture as part of an ongoing exploration of queer camouflage\, visibility\, and embodiment. In addition to the performances\, Fernandes has made curtains and props installed in the galleries and activated by dancers during performances. Brittany is also the founder of RICH Mamas Club\, a thriving community with over 550 members nationwide. She has coached over 100 women business owners across the country. Over the last four years\, Christopher has passionately cultivated a vibrant art hub and community space in Saint Louis with his Cherokee Street storefront (Field Club Media) as a focal point for creativity and collaboration. Christopher’s work embodies accessibility and depth\, reflecting the essence of local inspirations and everyday life experiences. \nKelly McGowan is a proud St. Louisan and health equity advocate. Kelly has worked in New York and St. Louis to co-create various wellness programs addressing the health inequities that persist among Black Americans. Kelly has participated in various panels and has been featured in print and radio appearances addressing health equity efforts in the St. Louis region. Most recently\, Kelly has founded the new entity Transform 314. Visitors who are Deaf and hard of hearing are invited to kick off the event with a special happy hour in partnership with DEAF Inc. Next\, writer\, speaker\, and disability activist Katie Banister will provide a presentation including her personal story\, her vision as President of Access-4-All of “full inclusion where everyone counts and has access to a fulfilled and truly accessible life\,” and a discussion of the role that poetry and creativity play in turning anger into art. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 1\, 2021\, 5:30-6:30pm \nGrand Center Arts District and Strauss Park \n3534 Washington Ave\, St Louis\, MO 63103 \n  \n5:30 – 6pm:  See performances of site-specific dance and live music.  Audiences are encouraged to walk\, bike\, or drive-by to view the performances taking place simultaneously at multiple outdoor locations. \n\nGrand Center Arts Plaza\nThe Sheldon (Plaza)\nPark-Like/The Pulitzer Arts Foundation\nThird Baptist Church (Stairs)\n\n6 – 6:20pm:  Strauss Park – full ensemble performance \n  \n InTRANSIT is a walk\, bike\, drive-by traveling performance of dance and live music taking place at multiple locations in the Grand Center Arts District in St. Louis.  In an effort to work together as a creative community\, 20+ dancers and a handful of musicians offer viewers an opportunity to experience these beautiful art forms in real time and socially distant space. (Free public performance) \n\nJoining the dancers are featured musicians:  Lance Garger (percussion)\, Harvey Lockhart (saxophone)\, Rick Kramer (percussion)\, Sky Kingsland (percussion)\, Kalo Hoyle (bass)\, and Tory Starbuck (electronics)\n\n  \nInTRANSIT will coordinate with First Fridays in the Grand Center Arts District. Linking the InTRANSIT performance with First Fridays will further generate the vibrancy of an artistic community in the district as people walking from gallery to gallery can experience dance performances and live music along the way.  A map of the performance locations will be available online through the Karlovsky & Company Dance website www.karlovskydance.org.
