Created between the 1950s and the present\, the artworks respond to distinct social and political moments\, from unrest in the United States during the Vietnam War to Peru’s military dictatorship. Featured artists include Francis Alÿs\, Rasheed Araeen\, Siah Armajani\, Tania Bruguera and INSTAR\, Lygia Clark\, Hélio Oiticica\, Yoko Ono\, Lygia Pape\, and Franz Erhard Walther. \nJoin us for an evening reception from 5–9pm\, plus a public activation of Franz Erhard Walther’s work.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 1\, 2021\, 5:30-6:30pm \nGrand Center Arts District and Strauss Park \n3534 Washington Ave\, St Louis\, MO 63103 \n  \n5:30 – 6pm:  See performances of site-specific dance and live music.  Audiences are encouraged to walk\, bike\, or drive-by to view the performances taking place simultaneously at multiple outdoor locations. \n\nGrand Center Arts Plaza\nThe Sheldon (Plaza)\nPark-Like/The Pulitzer Arts Foundation\nThird Baptist Church (Stairs)\n\n6 – 6:20pm:  Strauss Park – full ensemble performance \n  \n InTRANSIT is a walk\, bike\, drive-by traveling performance of dance and live music taking place at multiple locations in the Grand Center Arts District in St. Louis.  In an effort to work together as a creative community\, 20+ dancers and a handful of musicians offer viewers an opportunity to experience these beautiful art forms in real time and socially distant space. (Free public performance) \n\nJoining the dancers are featured musicians:  Lance Garger (percussion)\, Harvey Lockhart (saxophone)\, Rick Kramer (percussion)\, Sky Kingsland (percussion)\, Kalo Hoyle (bass)\, and Tory Starbuck (electronics)\n\n  \nInTRANSIT will coordinate with First Fridays in the Grand Center Arts District. Linking the InTRANSIT performance with First Fridays will further generate the vibrancy of an artistic community in the district as people walking from gallery to gallery can experience dance performances and live music along the way.  A map of the performance locations will be available online through the Karlovsky & Company Dance website www.karlovskydance.org. Hosted by St. Louis’s own Maxi Glamour\, the evening takes inspiration from Liz Johnson Artur’s series of photographs taken at the East London club night PDA (Public Displays of Affection)\, a space for queer and non-binary expression and experimental DJs. \n\n5:00 pm Maxi Glamour kicks off the show\, with a hello from CAM Executive Director Lisa Melandri\n5:30 pm Art at Home: Tape Resist Paintings — In a painting demonstration led by CAM Learning & Engagement Staff CJ Mitchell and Miriam Ruiz\, explore how colors can express our experience and identity\, including a closer look at the colors in various LGTBQ+ flags for inspiration.
