In 1967\, after Joseph S. Kingsley\, Jr. is killed in a tragic accident\, his charismatic son inherits the weight of that legacy. But Joe III is a free spirit–and a little bit reckless. Despite his best intentions\, he has trouble meeting the expectations of a nation\, as well as those of his exacting mother\, Dottie. \nMeanwhile\, no one ever expected anything of Cate Cooper. She\, too\, grew up fatherless–and after her mother marries an abusive man\, she is forced to fend for herself. After being discovered by a model scout at age sixteen\, Cate decides that her looks may be her only ticket out of the cycle of disappointment that her mother has always inhabited. Before too long\, Cate’s face is in magazines and on billboards. Yet she feels like a fraud\, faking it in a world to which she’s never truly belonged. \nWhen Joe and Cate unexpectedly cross paths one afternoon\, their connection is instant and intense. But can their relationship survive the glare of the spotlight and the so-called Kingsley curse? In a beautifully written novel that captures a gilded moment in American history\, Emily Giffin tells the story of two people searching for belonging and identity\, as well as the answer to the question: Are certain love stories meant to be? \nPraise for Meant to Be and Emily Giffin \n” Meant To Be is the most golden\, heart-crunching\, epic love story\, which swept me away into another time and another world.” –Sophie Kinsella \n“A dependably down-to-earth\, girlfriendly storyteller.” –The New York Times \n“[A] modern-day Jane Austen.” –Vanity Fair\n“Giffin’s writing is true\, smart\, and heartfelt.” –Entertainment Weekly \n“Giffin [has a] trademark ability to capture the complexities of human emotions while telling a rip-roaring tale.” –The Washington Post \n“Giffin is a worldwide bestselling author because she gets under your skin–by creating relatable characters wrestling within believable situations.” –The Atlanta Journal-Constitution \n“If you’ve never read Emily Giffin\, Meant to Be is the perfect place to start. This glorious\, satisfying novel from the master storyteller of contemporary fiction is impossible to put down. It’s Giffin’s best novel yet–and they are all exceptional.” –Adriana Trigiani\, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Left Undone \nEmily Giffin is the author of ten internationally bestselling novels: Something Borrowed\, Something Blue\, Baby Proof\, Love the One You’re With\, Heart of the Matter\, Where We Belong\, The One & Only\, First Comes Love\, All We Ever Wanted\, and The Lies That Bind. SUMMARY:Performance: Artwork and Arias with Opera Theatre of St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:CAM and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) present an interdisciplinary event inspired by the work of artist Martine Gutierrez. Just as Gutierrez’s exhibit allows viewers to experience the fantasy and illusion of consumer spectacle\, so too will OTSL’s singers subvert the artistic trope of woman as victim with a musical program exploring sexuality\, femininity\, and power. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Dive In: CAM’s 2022 Gala
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 22\, 2022\n6:00–11:00 pm\nCoronado Ballroom\n3701 Lindell Blvd\nSt. Louis\, MO 63108 \nHonoring Nancy and Ken Kranzberg\nGala Chairs: JiaMin and Michael Dierberg \nCAM’s 2022 Gala is all about getting back into the swim of things. Experience a Palm Springs pool party (sans pool) with big sunglasses\, cool coifs\, and gimlets galore. Isn’t that Julie Christie behind those Foster Grants? Inspired by the poolside glamor shots of artist Martine Gutierrez\, whose Hit Movie: Vol. 1 is on view during CAM’s spring/summer exhibitions\, DIVE IN encourages everyone to go absolutely mod through fashion and swagger\, fine dining and dancing (do the Swim!)\, and cocktails with a twist. The gala not only supports CAM’s dynamic range of exhibitions\, public programs\, educational initiatives\, and community collaborations\, but this year we honor two sunny spirits who have made St. Louis better—Nancy and Ken Kranzberg. Nancy and Ken supported CAM long before it moved into its corner cabana on Washington Boulevard. In recent years they have made the Grand Center Arts District come alive under the umbrella of the Kranzberg Arts Foundation. The Kranzbergs always DIVE IN! \nJoin your friends and make a big splash for the Kranzbergs and for CAM at DIVE IN. The water’s fine. \nSponsorship opportunities available. For information contact spalermo@camstl.org.

SUMMARY:THE RIMERS OF ELDRITCH
DESCRIPTION:In the Kranzberg Black Box  \nAs Martin Gottfried comments\, “It is a simple one. A mystery\, really. A man has been murdered. The mystery is\, who he is\, who murdered him and what were the circumstances? And to solve it\, Wilson looks at the outsides and insides of his tiny\, Middle Western town. He looks at a middleman woman who falls in love with the young man who comes to work in her cafe. He looks at a coarse\, nasty woman mistreating her senile mother\, who is obsessed with visions of Eldritch being evil and headed for blood-spilling. He looks at a tender relationship between a young man and a dreamy\, crippled girl. But Wilson sees far more than this. He is grasping the very fabric of Bible Belt America\, with its catchword morality (‘virgin\,’ ‘God-fearing’) and its capability for the vicious. He senses the rhythm of its life and the cruelty it can impose. He understands the speech patterns of its loveless gossips\, its sex-hungry boys\, its compassionless preachers\, its car-conscious blondes.” In the end Wilson’s portrait of Eldritch is full length\, and the truth of its revelations will be pondered long after the stage lights have dimmed\, and the play has ended.

SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art: Enduring Care
DESCRIPTION:Every year on December 1\, World AIDS Day offers a show of support for people living with HIV and AIDS. This year for Day With(out) Art: Enduring Care\, CAM pairs screenings of artist videos commissioned by Visual AIDS with a panel discussion featuring individuals from our community. \nTo begin the program\, a roundtable conversation features local voices on the power of community care through art\, activism\, and cultural organizing. Although this year marks the fortieth anniversary of the first diagnosed HIV/AIDS patient in 1981\, it is important to note that the earliest known case of AIDS was actually here in St. Louis. Robert Rayford\, a 16-year old St. Louis native passed away at City Hospital in 1969. At the time\, his cause of death was unknown\, but in 1987\, his collected tissue samples were analyzed and revealed he had died from an AIDS-related illness. With this information\, we now know that communities were impacted by HIV long before the medical industry acknowledged it\, and community care was involved with those affected by the disease before HIV service organizations emerged. \nFrom histories of harm reduction and prison activism to the long-term effects of HIV medication and stigma\, the commissioned videos center on stories of collective care\, mutual aid\, and the rise of a solidarity movement that recast community work as a form of medicine. The program disrupts the assumption that an epidemic can be solved with pharmaceuticals alone\, pointing to corrupt leadership within government and non-profit organizations\, as well as broader racial and gender inequities that persist despite scientific advances. Community care was the only option for people living with HIV prior to 1981\, and due to the limitations of biomedical intervention\, it remains just as essential today. \nWarm drinks and light refreshments provided. \n5:30 pm – Doors Open\n \nThe following organizations will provide tabling with information: City of St. Louis Department of Health\, Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri\, Project ARK\, and What Would an HIV Doula Do? \n6:00 pm – Roundtable Conversation\n \n\nLois Conley: Founder/President/CEO of The Griot Museum of Black History\, host of the Impact HIV/AIDS Initiative\nMontrelle Day: HIV educator and activist and Senior Outreach Specialist at Community Wellness Project\nMiyonnee Hickman: HIV advocate\, Transgender-women Intervention Specialist at Community Wellness Project\, and Coalition Coordinator for the MO Ho Justice Coalition\ncharles ryan long: artist\, activist\, and Black liberationist who has recently been a Visual AIDS featured artist\n\n7:00 pm – Visual AIDS video program\nEight short videos commissioned by Visual AIDS will highlight strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. The program will feature newly commissioned work by Topher Campbell\, Katherine Cheairs\, Cristóbal Guerra\, Danny Kilbride\, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad\, Beto Pérez\, Steed Taylor\, and J Triangular. The artists in this year’s program were selected through an open call process juried by Ivy Arce\, Jean Carlomusto\, Thomas Allen Harris\, and Mathew Rodriguez. Running time: 60 minutes.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Where is the Friend’s House?
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Abbas Kiarostami\, Iran\, 1987\, 87 minutes \nThe first in Abbas Kiarostami’s sublime\, interlacing trilogy of films set in the northern Iranian village of Koker\, Where is the Friend’s House? takes a premise of fable-like simplicity—a boy searches for the home of his classmate whose school notebook he has accidentally taken—and transforms this simple narrative into a miraculous\, child’s-eye adventure of the everyday. As the young hero zigzags determinedly across two towns aided (and sometimes misdirected) by those he encounters\, his quest becomes both a revealing portrait of Iranian society in all its richness and complexity and a touching parable about the meaning of personal responsibility. Shot through with all the wonder\, beauty\, tension\, and mystery one day can contain\, Where is the Friend’s House? established Kiarostami’s reputation as one cinema’s most sensitive and profound humanists. The film was selected by artist Farah Al Qasimi as an accompaniment to Everywhere there is splendor her newly commissioned\, photo-based installation across CAM’s Project Wall. She selected the film because it “speaks to the way that children form their own moral codes and senses of responsibility in a beautiful and sensitive way.” \nCo-presented with the Cinema St. Louis as part of the 30th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Archipelago
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Felix Dufour-Laperrière\, Canada\, 2020\, 71 min. \nThe animated essay film Archipelago is partly documentary but mostly fiction\, although poetry may be the best comparison. The film is an abstract meditation on Québec\, the St. Lawrence River\, and the waterway’s islands. Formally ambitious and undeniably accomplished\, Archipelago has a distinct avant-garde sensibility and employs a diverse array of graphic approaches as it unfolds. Sight & Sound describes Archipelago as “a freewheeling showcase of 12 animators deploying wildly different styles to evoke myriad moods\, images and sensations connected\, directly or tangentially\, with Québec. Animation techniques overlap with live-action footage amid hallucinatory swirls of on-screen hand-written text; old maps\, photographs and films—most prominently a 1941 newsreel-style reportage—are presented\, augmented\, rotoscoped and distorted; the concrete morphs into the impressionistic.” A discussion will be held after the screening with Colin Burnett\, Associate Professor of Film & Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. \nCo-presented with Cinema St. Louis as part of the 30th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival. A virtual screening on demand will be available through Cinema St. Louis.

SUMMARY:IT IS MAGIC
DESCRIPTION:IT IS MAGIC is a sorrowful and hilarious meditation on the deep\, ancient evil at the heart of the community theatre audition process\, and an investigation into the mysteries of theatre-making itself. \nTwo sisters\, community theatre veterans who’ve never had the chance to contribute artistically\, are holding auditions for their adult version of The Three Little Pigs in the theatre basement\, while the group’s pretentious artistic director is avoiding opening night of his MACBETH on the MainStage above. \nThen a third sister appears\, and the magic gets real. Premiering in Chicago in 2019\, Third Coast Review called it “…one of those love letters to theatre…delightfully wacky\,” while New City Stage said “Any show that juggles loving critics and tearing their throats out is good in my book.” \nSuki Peters will direct IT IS MAGIC\, and the cast will include Nicole Angeli\, Michelle Hand\, Joe Hanrahan\, Carl Overly and Chrissie Watkins

SUMMARY:Jenny Tolman
DESCRIPTION:Irreverent\, quirky and wildly entertaining\, country newcomer Jenny Tolman is poised to take over Music City. With a razor-sharp wit and throwback sound\, Tolman is on deck to become her generation’s Roger Miller—a comedic troubadour with a decidedly feminine perspective\, offering savvy wordplay and wisdom far beyond her years. \nHer debut album There Goes the Neighborhood lit up Nashville in 2020. The 13-song collection—with titles like “High Class White Trash” and “Till My Tank Is Empty” delivers engaging snapshots of small-town life in the fictional Jennyville and was named one of the 40 best country albums of the year by Rolling Stone magazine. \nTolman\, whom veteran Music Row writer Robert K. Oermann says is “practically single-handedly bringing humor back into country music” has new music coming in 2021.

SUMMARY:YUSA!
DESCRIPTION:OF BUENA VISTA\, CUBA. LIVE!\n\nwith special guest Janet Evra\nHow can we possibly describe Yusa? You might be better off taking a couple hours and Googling “Yusa\, Cuba” to see how enormous of an influence this musician is.  In Cuba she is considered one of the most studious musicians on the island.  (Cuba in many ways is really where music is the most free and hip in the world.)  She was raised in the Buena Vista district (yes\, that Buena Vista) and studied in the Cuban education system on the musician track. Yes\, in Cuba you can study to be a musician from grade school. She was always ahead of her peers and having come from a music family she simply soared. \nAbout twenty years ago she became involved in a collaboration with Roberto Carcasses that involved many musicians. The project became known as “Interactivo” and is one of the most exciting musical collaborations in the world today. Great musicians have referred to Carcasses as the Duke Ellington of our time. Carcasses considers Yusa to be the most studious member of the group and the most mature; the backbone of the band. She is bilingual and a multi-instrumentalist. As one great musician put it\, “she plays bass like Jaco and sings like Joan Armatrading”. She is quite simply a superhero musician. A great amongst the greats. A person who plays music like it was always supposed to be played. Cuban music is at the top of the list when it comes to innovation\, fusion and originality and Yusa is considered one of the best in Cuba. A senior member. A person who commands respect wherever she goes. That is Yusa! \nShe is also extremely nice and giving. She does workshops wherever she tours to help young people embrace music. She has played all over the world and in front of thousands of fans at a time. Like all musicians\, Covid set her back. She was playing regularly in Argentina with a trio and absolutely blowing the doors off the place every night she played. When Covid hit she shut it down and eventually moved to New Orleans where she has been figuring out how to tour in America. She has a mini-tour set for Chicago\, Madison\, WI and two nights in STL.   A musician this great playing at The Kranzberg is a rare opportunity.  You won’t see a better musician at small venue\, ever. \nShe will bring two great New Orleans based musicians with her. Grayson Brockamp (Bass) and Fernando Lima (Drummer) Grayson will hold down the bass so that Yusa can sing and play guitar and tres but there may be some switching up in the night. Who knows?! When musicians are this great we don’t tell them what to do.
