SUMMARY:Liminal
DESCRIPTION:The final exhibition at Saint Louis University’s MOCRA celebrates 33 years of this first-of-its-kind museum and affirms the ongoing engagement of contemporary art with religion and spirituality. \nMOCRA is a unique expression of SLU’s mission. In this former Jesuit chapel\, tens of thousands of visitors from the campus community and the broader public have found a welcoming space for discovery\, reflection\, inspiration and connection. All of this has been made possible through the efforts of those who have worked at MOCRA and many other individuals and organizations who have contributed talent\, time\, and financial support to the museum. \nLiminal assembles artwork by 47 artists\, with many pieces familiar to regular MOCRA visitors. In addition\, MOCRA Director David Brinker invited contributing curators Jessica Baran\, René Paul Barilleaux\, Aaron Rosen and Summer Sloane-Britt to select works by artists not previously exhibited at the museum and place them in dialogue with works from the MOCRA collection. \nA special celebration will take place on April 19th. See website for more details.

SUMMARY:Legacy: Selections from the Gerald R. and Mary Reid Brunstrom Gift of Art from Australia
DESCRIPTION:From 1988 to 2000\, St. Louis art lovers frequented the Austral Gallery in Lafayette Square. Guided by the vision of founder Mary Reid Brunstrom with the unwavering support of her late husband Jerry\, Austral Gallery brought some of the most significant Australian voices in contemporary art to St. Louis and contributed to a growing awareness in North America of Australian Aboriginal art. \nBrunstrom played a key role in organizing two MOCRA exhibitions: in 1995\, Ian Friend: The Edge of Belief – paintings\, sculpture\, and works on paper\, 1980–1994\, and in 1997\, Utopia Body Paint Collection and Australian Aboriginal Art from St. Louis Collections. \nIn 2024\, Brunstrom donated a major body of works by both Aboriginal and non-Indigenous Australian artists to MOCRA and the Saint Louis University Museum of Art\, greatly enhancing both museums’ collections. MOCRA is pleased to present a selection of works from this gift and celebrate the lasting contribution of Jerry and Mary Brunstrom to the cultural fabric of St. Louis.

SUMMARY:Tom Kiefer: Pertenencias / Belongings
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 3 – Dec. 19\, 2021\nOpening reception Fri.\, Sept. 3\, 5 – 9 p.m.\nFree and open to the public \nMOCRA follows Saint Louis University’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines. The museum is currently open to both members of the SLU community and the general public. At present\, masks are required for all visitors to the museum. \nAdditional works by Tom Kiefer are on display at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art from Sept. 3 to Dec. 31\, in the exhibition El Sueño Americano / The American Dream: Photographs by Tom Kiefer. \nIn July 2003\, fine art photographer Tom Kiefer started working part-time as a janitor and groundskeeper at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing facility near Ajo\, Arizona. In mid-2007\, he was given permission to collect food confiscated from migrants and asylum seekers and donate it to a local food pantry. He was deeply moved at finding personal belongings in the trash bins along with the food. These items\, necessary for hygiene\, comfort and survival\, were deemed “non-essential” or “potentially lethal” and seized and discarded by officials. Kiefer began to quietly rescue what items he could\, and he resigned from his job in August 2014 to focus on photographing and documenting them in an ongoing project titled El Sueño Americano / The American Dream.
