SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Lucinda Williams and Her Band
DESCRIPTION:Lucinda Williams’ music has gotten her through her darkest days. It’s been that way since growing up amid family chaos in the Deep South\, as she recounts in her candid new memoir\, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. Over the past two years\, it’s been the force driving her recovery from a debilitating stroke she suffered on November 17\, 2020\, at age 67. Her masterful\, multi-Grammy-winning songwriting has never deserted her. To wit\, her stunning\, sixteenth studio album\, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart\, brims over with some of the best work of her career. And though Williams can no longer play her beloved guitar – a constant companion since age 12 – her distinctive vocals sound better than ever. \nBut post-stroke\, she had to revise her own songwriting process\, since she could no longer play guitar. “My process has always been to come up with some lyrics\, then get the guitar and come up with a melody and some kind of structure\,” Williams relates. “Once I get that\, then I’d go back and edit the lyrics and add more. Pretty much like when you write and revise a story\, except the guitar is added to it. It was very rare that I’d ever write all the lyrics completely without the guitar.” \nThrough all the hardships Williams faced in 2020 – a destructive tornado damaging her new home in Nashville\, being sidelined by the pandemic\, and then the catastrophic stroke – her music kept her going and continues to bring her more laurels. The past year has seen Williams honored by BMI for her songwriting\, her induction into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame\, and a Grammy Week tribute at the Troubadour\, with her songs performed by a diversity of Americana artists. She duetted with Willie Nelson on Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever\,” which won a Grammy in February for Best Country Performance. \nAs she promises on the powerful last track of Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart–one of the best albums of her career–Lucinda Williams is “never gonna fade away.”

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Pattie Chalmers
DESCRIPTION:Pattie Chalmers’ Mudmaid Museum is an exploration of folklore and legends that blurs the lines between myth and reality. Chalmers has created her own museum of catfish-beings\, referred to as “Mudmaids\,” believed to exist in the Mississippi River in a distant past. This unique concept of a museum within a gallery plays with the definitions of fact and fiction\, featuring artifacts created by Chalmers. The Mudmaid Museum exhibition reveals an alternate history\, a museum filled with artifacts from when Mudmaid apparitions were encountered in American waterways. In the Mudmaid Museum visitors will see books\, woodcarvings\, photographs\, rag dolls\, diaries\, letters\, whisker oil bottles and much more from the foggy past. \nPattie Chalmers grew up and went to art school in Winnipeg\, Canada. She received her B.F.A. in printmaking from the University of Manitoba in 1994\, and her M.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Minnesota in 2001.  Since graduating\, she has exhibited on five continents\, in six countries and in 34 states. She has had six solo exhibitions in the past eight years\, most recently the exhibitions Every Thing and More at the Craft Alliance in St. Louis and Imperfect Ramblings at Merwin Gallery at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington\, Illinois. \n  \nChalmers has taught at the University of Minnesota\, Ohio University and at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where she is currently a full professor.

It’s that good!” \n… “Finally\, a performer who can do the Sinatra songbook justice!” \n… “The voice and phrasing are spot-on.  And the music arrangements are textbook perfection!” \nDave has performed to capacity crowds in grand venues nationwide. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:With special guest Aida Victoria \nThe Friends of The Sheldon present Rhiannon Giddens in a concert benefitting Sheldon Educational Programs\, which\, in the 2022-2023 season served over 70\,000 St. Louis area students. \nAcclaimed folk musician Rhiannon Giddens uses her art to excavate the past and reveal bold truths about our present. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient\, Giddens co-founded the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops\, and is now a two-time winner\, with eight additional nominations for her work as a soloist and collaborator. Her newest album\, You’re the One\, is her third solo studio album and her first of all original songs. This collection of music written over the course of Giddens’ career bursts with life-affirming energy\, drawing from the folk music that she knows so deeply\, as well as its pop descendants. Featuring some of Giddens’ closest musical collaborators from the past decade including multi-instrumentalists Francesco Turrisi and Dirk Powell\, bassist Jason Sypher\, Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu\, and drummer Attis Clopton\, You’re the One captures the inclusive spirit that channels through all of her work. \n“I hope that people just hear American music\,” says Giddens. “Blues\, jazz\, Cajun\, country\, gospel\, and rock—it’s all there. I like to be where it meets organically. They’re fun songs\, and I wanted them to have as much of a chance as they could to reach people who might dig them but don’t know anything about what I do. If they’re introduced to me through this record\, they might go listen to other music I’ve made with a different set of ears.” \nAll prices include a $1 per ticket historic preservation fee.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
DESCRIPTION:Following an extended 50th anniversary tour\, the ensemble grew to a six-piece in 2018 for the first time since their early jug band days. The group now includes Jeff Hanna (acoustic guitar\, electric guitar)\, Jimmie Fadden (drums\, harmonica)\, Bob Carpenter (keyboards)\, Jim Photoglo (bass\, acoustic guitar)\, Ross Holmes (fiddle\, mandolin)\, and Jaime Hanna (electric and acoustic guitar). All six members also sing\, and when their voices merge\, the harmonies add a powerful new component for the legendary band. And with the father-son pairing of Jeff and Jaime Hanna\, the band carries on a country music tradition of blood harmony. \nJeff Hanna says\, “It’s like when you throw a couple of puppies into a pen with a bunch of old dogs. All of a sudden\, the old dogs start playing\, you know? That’s kind of what’s happened with us. The basic vibe is so up and positive\, and the music– we’re hearing surprises from Jaime and Ross all night. And they’re encouraging us in the same way to take more chances. It’s opened a lot of doors for us\, musically\, and the morale is really great. That’s important for a band that’s been out there for over 53 years.” \nThe Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played their first gig in 1966 in Southern California as a jug band and by 1969 had become a cornerstone of the burgeoning country-rock community. Their career breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of the record Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy and the single “Mr. Bojangles\,” a folksy Top 10 pop hit that remains a staple of their live show. During a tour stop in Nashville around that time\, Earl Scruggs and his family came backstage to say hello. That introduction led to a friendship and some of the connections the band needed to record Will the Circle Be Unbroken. That three-disc album brought Nitty Gritty Dirt Band together with a number of country\, folk\, and bluegrass legends. Heroes like Roy Acuff\, Mother Maybelle Carter\, Jimmy Martin\, Merle Travis\, and Doc Watson joined the scruffy\, young band to record country music standards such as “I Saw the Light” and “Keep on the Sunnyside.” The acclaimed project is considered a landmark recording in American music. \nTicket price includes $3 facility fee.

SUMMARY:A Saxy Summer Night with Jeanette Harris & Althea René - The Queens of Soul
DESCRIPTION:Jeanette Harris is the scintillating saxtress of smooth jazz. She was born and raised in California’s post-Gold Rush town of Fresno in the center of the San Joaquin Valley. Reared by her mother\, Annette\, and her church organist father\, Floyd Harris – both of deep spiritual faith and intense believers in the art of music – Harris and her older brother\, Michael\, received their love of God and family genetically. Harris played saxophone and piano from grade school to high school where band teacher Steve Alcala also had her play in the Fresno City College jazz band even before she graduated high school. She won numerous awards and accolades\, which led to a scholarship to attend Berklee in Boston where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance. \nThis lady understands that energetic and captivating performances matched with uplifting and inspiring vibrations in the music are the solid platinum recipe for success. Fans already recognize her for her wonderful cover of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do\,” which hit Billboard’s smooth jazz singles chart from her previous album\, Saxified. Classically trained in both sax and piano\, a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music\, and the saxophonist for the late\, great Teena Marie’s final year of touring\, Jeanette Harris has weathered the fiercest challenges to bring the world her own brand of soulful healing vibes. \nAlthea René was born December 25 in Detroit\, Michigan and began her musical journey at the tender age four. She studied classical music while attending Howard University in Washington D.C. and later gained further musical inspiration from the accomplishments of Yusef Lateef\, Ian Anderson\, and her father (one of Motown’s original Funk Brothers) Dezie McCullers. She has since developed her own creative style. For more than 10 years she was employed as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff (Detroit\, Michigan). Today\, she is a full-time performing/recording artist and some regard her as a “master of her craft” and one of the world’s most exciting solo improvisational flutists. \nIn May 2013\, she released her fifth project In The Flow. Collaborating with Grammy award winning producer Michael Broening\, (producer for legendary icons George Benson and Paul McCartney) she cowrote the title track. That single became her biggest hit and reached number one ranking on both the Billboard Chart and the Smooth Jazz Chart. Althea René made history by becoming the first flute player in the history of Billboard Chart to reach the number one spot. In April 2017\, Althea René\, in collaboration with award winning producer Lew Laing\, delivered another solid tour de force. “Gypsy Soul” is the first single release from her powerful\, scorching hot CD UNSTOPPABLE. Althea René also launched her first book in June 2018 entitled “Becoming Chocolate Barbie – A guide for professional women in the music business.”

SUMMARY:Artists First: Connection\, Cohesion & Changeability
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Luke Allison\, Ricky Douglas\, David Fishman\, Julie Hart\, Nakia Jones\, Kevin Ngo\, Danny Speck and Dakota Thomas \nThe exhibition will feature 20 Artists First artists\, highlighting their passion and dedication to their art. Some of the artists have been involved with Artists First for over 10 years and consider the studio their haven. Each featured artist has a unique story to tell. \nArtists First is a non-profit open art studio that fosters independence through creative self-expression for adults with pervasive mental illness\, developmental disabilities\, and traumatic brain injury. The studio serves over 300 artists annually through a range of artistic programs that provide a creative platform for groups often confined to the fringes of society. With varying levels of supervision depending on the individual needs of the artists\, Artists First staff and volunteers promote participants’ self-esteem through their independent use of materials\, exploration of the world of creating art and socialization with their peers. \nOne featured artist has both Down syndrome and autism. She has difficulty seeing\, which directly correlates to the intricate mark making shown in her work. She then uses a palette knife instead of a brush to spread the paint out both vertically and horizontally. Once she has filled the canvas and the paint has dried\, she goes in with a color pencil\, meticulously holding each color pencil up to her face and examining it before deciding where to place it on the canvas. The colored pencil marks almost serve as stitches between the different colors of paint. The artist has grown tremendously since beginning at Artists First\, both artistically and developmentally. \nAugust 4 – 12PM \nAugust 5 – 10 AM \nAugust 6 – 10 AM \n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by Christy Beckmann\, Nina Needleman and Peggy W. DESCRIPTION:This half day camp runs from 9 to 11: 30 a.m. \nArt journaling is a wonderful habit for everyone\, not just artists! Keeping a journal that contains one’s inspirations\, frustrations\, dreams and fears is a way to creatively process everyday life. Campers will study the Grand Center Arts District as a group for on-site drawing and journaling\, and have tours at neighboring institutions including the Pulitzer Arts Foundation and Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. They will receive a new sketchbook and learn different drawing techniques from a professional working artist. \nInstructor Jacob Janes is a Missouri-born painter and educator currently living in St. Louis. He received his MFA in Studio Art from Marywood University in Scranton\, Pennsylvania and now teaches at Janes and Pang Atelier alongside his partner. His artwork celebrates the strengths and possibilities of painting. He enjoys the process of inventing subjects for his compositions\, which generally come across as straightforward and poetic. \nThere must be a minimum of 6 students enrolled in this camp.
