SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:With special guest Aida Victoria \nThe Friends of The Sheldon present Rhiannon Giddens in a concert benefitting Sheldon Educational Programs\, which\, in the 2022-2023 season served over 70\,000 St. Louis area students. \nAcclaimed folk musician Rhiannon Giddens uses her art to excavate the past and reveal bold truths about our present. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient\, Giddens co-founded the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops\, and is now a two-time winner\, with eight additional nominations for her work as a soloist and collaborator. Her newest album\, You’re the One\, is her third solo studio album and her first of all original songs. This collection of music written over the course of Giddens’ career bursts with life-affirming energy\, drawing from the folk music that she knows so deeply\, as well as its pop descendants. Featuring some of Giddens’ closest musical collaborators from the past decade including multi-instrumentalists Francesco Turrisi and Dirk Powell\, bassist Jason Sypher\, Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu\, and drummer Attis Clopton\, You’re the One captures the inclusive spirit that channels through all of her work. \n“I hope that people just hear American music\,” says Giddens. “Blues\, jazz\, Cajun\, country\, gospel\, and rock—it’s all there. I like to be where it meets organically. They’re fun songs\, and I wanted them to have as much of a chance as they could to reach people who might dig them but don’t know anything about what I do. If they’re introduced to me through this record\, they might go listen to other music I’ve made with a different set of ears.” \nAll prices include a $1 per ticket historic preservation fee.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
DESCRIPTION:Following an extended 50th anniversary tour\, the ensemble grew to a six-piece in 2018 for the first time since their early jug band days. The group now includes Jeff Hanna (acoustic guitar\, electric guitar)\, Jimmie Fadden (drums\, harmonica)\, Bob Carpenter (keyboards)\, Jim Photoglo (bass\, acoustic guitar)\, Ross Holmes (fiddle\, mandolin)\, and Jaime Hanna (electric and acoustic guitar). All six members also sing\, and when their voices merge\, the harmonies add a powerful new component for the legendary band. And with the father-son pairing of Jeff and Jaime Hanna\, the band carries on a country music tradition of blood harmony. \nJeff Hanna says\, “It’s like when you throw a couple of puppies into a pen with a bunch of old dogs. All of a sudden\, the old dogs start playing\, you know? That’s kind of what’s happened with us. The basic vibe is so up and positive\, and the music– we’re hearing surprises from Jaime and Ross all night. And they’re encouraging us in the same way to take more chances. It’s opened a lot of doors for us\, musically\, and the morale is really great. That’s important for a band that’s been out there for over 53 years.” \nThe Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played their first gig in 1966 in Southern California as a jug band and by 1969 had become a cornerstone of the burgeoning country-rock community. Their career breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of the record Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy and the single “Mr. Bojangles\,” a folksy Top 10 pop hit that remains a staple of their live show. During a tour stop in Nashville around that time\, Earl Scruggs and his family came backstage to say hello. That introduction led to a friendship and some of the connections the band needed to record Will the Circle Be Unbroken. That three-disc album brought Nitty Gritty Dirt Band together with a number of country\, folk\, and bluegrass legends. Heroes like Roy Acuff\, Mother Maybelle Carter\, Jimmy Martin\, Merle Travis\, and Doc Watson joined the scruffy\, young band to record country music standards such as “I Saw the Light” and “Keep on the Sunnyside.” The acclaimed project is considered a landmark recording in American music. \nTicket price includes $3 facility fee.

SUMMARY:A Saxy Summer Night with Jeanette Harris & Althea René - The Queens of Soul
DESCRIPTION:Jeanette Harris is the scintillating saxtress of smooth jazz. She was born and raised in California’s post-Gold Rush town of Fresno in the center of the San Joaquin Valley. Reared by her mother\, Annette\, and her church organist father\, Floyd Harris – both of deep spiritual faith and intense believers in the art of music – Harris and her older brother\, Michael\, received their love of God and family genetically. Harris played saxophone and piano from grade school to high school where band teacher Steve Alcala also had her play in the Fresno City College jazz band even before she graduated high school. She won numerous awards and accolades\, which led to a scholarship to attend Berklee in Boston where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance. \nThis lady understands that energetic and captivating performances matched with uplifting and inspiring vibrations in the music are the solid platinum recipe for success. Fans already recognize her for her wonderful cover of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do\,” which hit Billboard’s smooth jazz singles chart from her previous album\, Saxified. Classically trained in both sax and piano\, a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music\, and the saxophonist for the late\, great Teena Marie’s final year of touring\, Jeanette Harris has weathered the fiercest challenges to bring the world her own brand of soulful healing vibes. \nAlthea René was born December 25 in Detroit\, Michigan and began her musical journey at the tender age four. She studied classical music while attending Howard University in Washington D.C. and later gained further musical inspiration from the accomplishments of Yusef Lateef\, Ian Anderson\, and her father (one of Motown’s original Funk Brothers) Dezie McCullers. She has since developed her own creative style. For more than 10 years she was employed as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff (Detroit\, Michigan). Today\, she is a full-time performing/recording artist and some regard her as a “master of her craft” and one of the world’s most exciting solo improvisational flutists. \nIn May 2013\, she released her fifth project In The Flow. Collaborating with Grammy award winning producer Michael Broening\, (producer for legendary icons George Benson and Paul McCartney) she cowrote the title track. That single became her biggest hit and reached number one ranking on both the Billboard Chart and the Smooth Jazz Chart. Althea René made history by becoming the first flute player in the history of Billboard Chart to reach the number one spot. In April 2017\, Althea René\, in collaboration with award winning producer Lew Laing\, delivered another solid tour de force. “Gypsy Soul” is the first single release from her powerful\, scorching hot CD UNSTOPPABLE. Althea René also launched her first book in June 2018 entitled “Becoming Chocolate Barbie – A guide for professional women in the music business.”

With varying levels of supervision depending on the individual needs of the artists\, Artists First staff and volunteers promote participants’ self-esteem through their independent use of materials\, exploration of the world of creating art and socialization with their peers. \nOne featured artist has both Down syndrome and autism. She has difficulty seeing\, which directly correlates to the intricate mark making shown in her work. She then uses a palette knife instead of a brush to spread the paint out both vertically and horizontally. Once she has filled the canvas and the paint has dried\, she goes in with a color pencil\, meticulously holding each color pencil up to her face and examining it before deciding where to place it on the canvas. The colored pencil marks almost serve as stitches between the different colors of paint. The artist has grown tremendously since beginning at Artists First\, both artistically and developmentally. \nAugust 4 – 12PM \nAugust 5 – 10 AM \nAugust 6 – 10 AM \n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by Christy Beckmann\, Nina Needleman and Peggy W. Symes

With the release of his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career\, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years\, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre. \nAs well as being an accomplished musician\, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 19\, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music\, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). \nMetheny won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental\, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording\, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo\, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. SUMMARY:Alarm Will Sound: Metadire
DESCRIPTION:Alarm Will Sound is “one of the most vital and original ensembles on the American music scene” (The New York Times) and St. Louis “hometown heroes” (The Riverfront Times). With classical skill and unlimited curiosity\, the 20-member ensemble has been associated since inception with composers at the forefront of contemporary music\, establishing a reputation for performing innovative music ranging from the arch-modernist to the pop-influenced with energetic virtuosity. \nThey are joined by Anaïs Maviel\, New York-based vocalist dedicated to expanding the power of music as a healing and transformative act. Together\, Alarm Will Sound and Maviel will present Métadire\, a metaphysical inquiry. The piece explores\, in the composer’s words\, “the potentiality of the edges of reality to become perceptible.” \nIn addition to Maviel\, the piece will feature improvisational solos by members of the ensemble\, including Erin Lesser\, flute; Nate Wooley\, trumpet; John Orfe\, piano; and Matt Smallcomb\, drums.

SUMMARY:Golf the Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 6th season of this playable\, artist-designed\, nine-hole mini golf installation\, designed to be inclusive\, family friendly and accessible. All proceeds from Golf the Galleries support The Sheldon’s visual arts programming\, offering opportunities for local and national artists to share their work with the St. Louis community through free gallery exhibitions and educational programs. \nHole #1: Take the Factory Tour by Dave Kish finds players putting their balls through the stages of product life: factory\, fairway and dump! Creator Dave Kish presents a collection of recycled cardboard wall sculptures to compliment a zany industrial-themed miniature golf hole where players can take the “factory tour.” Kish is a St. Louis-based designer and builder. Twice a graduate of Lehigh University\, he also studied at the design think-tank SCI-Arc and has compiled extensive and overlapping portfolios in the fields of architecture\, fine art\, illustration and education. \nHole #2: MuseumCeption by City Museum and artists True Mead & Angelina Brown incorporates several exhibits displayed within the confines of City Museum that many who visit are not familiar with. Most know City Museum as a metalworks playground\, focused on reuse\, where structures and components of other once-upon-a-time buildings become the play place for children and adults of all ages. This new mini golf hole highlights collections and items being shown for the very first time! City Museum is a Maker Sponsor  \nHole #3: Sound Moves by the World Chess Hall of Fame is the first golf hole dedicated to the intersection of chess and music! It will include artifacts and media representing a wide range of musical genres\, both traditional and contemporary\, featuring a selection of the greatest and most influential musicians and chess players the world has seen. A full exhibition on this subject is currently on display at the World Chess Hall of Fame in the Central West End at 4652 Maryland Avenue. World Chess Hall of Fame is a Maker Sponsor \nHole #4: Candyman by LitShop is based on the beloved Roald Dahl children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the trio of films that followed. The immersive mini golf hole mimics the experiences of the movie characters when they first enter Wonka’s factory. Golfers can take selfies with a life-size cutout of the candyman himself\, Willy Wonka. LitShop is a non-profit organization that pairs literacy with hands-on making and building for girls and gender-expansive youth ages 10-16. Founded in 2019\, LitShop offers workshops in reading\, writing\, building and making through modalities such as design\, woodworking\, carpentry\, printmaking and fiber arts. \nHole #5: Putt your way upstream on Wally and Jacob Hauck’s Fly Fishing. Inspired by their love for fly fishing in Missouri’s beautiful streams\, the golf hole’s centerpiece features a large sculpture of a native trout. Over the last 15 years\, the Hauck’s have been working with a variety of agricultural companies to design and create large-scale sculptures depicting the properties of plants and scientific innovations for display at national trade shows. The Hauck’s are known for turning imaginative ideas into stunning realities\, and their talent will be on full display in this unique hole! \nHole #6:  If you hit it\, it’s a Drum by artists Kelsey and Philip Jordan encourage users to explore the act of creating sound and rhythm out of known musical and found instruments. The artists\, one a pianist and one a bassist\, believe that music is important in child development and exploration\, and is beneficial to all ages. Players “make some music” by taking one of the boomwhackers (tuned percussion tubes) around the column to play a little tune – just what they need to make that hole in one! \nHole #7: A Trip to the Moon by Paul Casey and Sarah Frost\nPlayers can choose one of two methods of travel to our favorite celestial body. Starting at adjacent points\, one route follows Jules Verne’s 19th century cannon\, while the other tracks the 1969 moon landing. Paul Casey was props master for over 25 years for Opera Theatre of St. Louis and at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis\, and has freelanced for local TV stations\, small theaters and trade show companies. Sarah Frost has created sculptures and installation art for 15 years. Originally trained as a painter\, she also enjoys working as a set painter at The Muny and other local theaters and returns to Golf the Galleries for a second season after last year’s audience-favorite installation\, Hole at the Pole. \nHole #8: The Anatomy of a House by Silas Coggeshall takes inspiration from literature and explores the age-old notion of a haunted house. What happens when the function of architecture and furniture becomes obtuse or even antagonistic to the human experience? What does the history of an object look like when made visible? What sort of presence does a home have when given the attributes of a living organism that has become malignant? Golfers must maneuver through an uncanny\, haunting and macabre depiction of the home in this delightfully chilling hole. \nHole #9: Kelsey and Philip Jordan have made the final hole a walk in the park: the dog park! Day at the Dog Park creates a sense of fun and play in one of the most genuinely joyful places for its users. Furry companions remind us to let our stresses go and find excitement in little things like TREATS! BALL! WALKS! There is always something new to explore and a story that’s being created – who was there before them and what were they doing? Together\, Phil and Kelsey Jordan are experienced architectural\, furniture\, construction and graphic designers. They return to Golf the Galleries for a 3rd year.
