SUMMARY:NEW DATE: Judy Collins
DESCRIPTION:The Judy Collins show scheduled for October 26th\, 2022 has been rescheduled.  Due to a medical issue involving a recent broken arm\, Ms. Collins is unable to perform the originally scheduled date.  A full recovery is expected and she looks forward to performing at The Sheldon on June 27th\, 2023. \nPlease hold on to your tickets as they will be honored at the rescheduled show. Refunds are available upon request. E-mail online@metrotix.com or call 314.534.1111 by November 17\, 2022 to request a refund. \nWe apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. \nJudy Collins has long inspired audiences with sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work\, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nThe award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album\, Wildflowers\, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns\,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music\, won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits gold-and platinum-selling albums. Recently\, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright\, Shawn Colvin\, Dolly Parton\, Joan Baez\, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins. \nJudy’s most recent collaboration with her as a singer-songwriter is the 2020 television special and album Winter Stories\, including critically-acclaimed Norwegian folk artist Jonas Fjeld\, and masterful Americana band Chatham County Line. Winter Stories is a collection of classics\, new tunes\, and a few surprises\, featuring spirited lead vocal turns\, breathtaking duets\, and Judy’s stunning harmony singing. \nJudy is as creatively vigorous as ever\, writing\, touring worldwide\, and nurturing fresh talent. She is a modern-day Renaissance woman who is also an accomplished painter\, filmmaker\, record label head\, musical mentor\, and an in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention. She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart.

SUMMARY:Pat Metheny: Side Eye
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. With the release of his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career\, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. \nMetheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years\, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar\, small ensembles\, electric and acoustic instruments\, large orchestras\, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project\, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre. \nAs well as being an accomplished musician\, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 19\, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music\, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). \nMetheny won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental\, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording\, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo\, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame. Metheny continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community\, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike\, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

SUMMARY:Alarm Will Sound: Metadire
DESCRIPTION:Alarm Will Sound is “one of the most vital and original ensembles on the American music scene” (The New York Times) and St. Louis “hometown heroes” (The Riverfront Times). With classical skill and unlimited curiosity\, the 20-member ensemble has been associated since inception with composers at the forefront of contemporary music\, establishing a reputation for performing innovative music ranging from the arch-modernist to the pop-influenced with energetic virtuosity. \nThey are joined by Anaïs Maviel\, New York-based vocalist dedicated to expanding the power of music as a healing and transformative act. Together\, Alarm Will Sound and Maviel will present Métadire\, a metaphysical inquiry. The piece explores\, in the composer’s words\, “the potentiality of the edges of reality to become perceptible.” \nIn addition to Maviel\, the piece will feature improvisational solos by members of the ensemble\, including Erin Lesser\, flute; Nate Wooley\, trumpet; John Orfe\, piano; and Matt Smallcomb\, drums.

SUMMARY:Golf the Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 6th season of this playable\, artist-designed\, nine-hole mini golf installation\, designed to be inclusive\, family friendly and accessible. All proceeds from Golf the Galleries support The Sheldon’s visual arts programming\, offering opportunities for local and national artists to share their work with the St. Louis community through free gallery exhibitions and educational programs. \nHole #1: Take the Factory Tour by Dave Kish finds players putting their balls through the stages of product life: factory\, fairway and dump! Creator Dave Kish presents a collection of recycled cardboard wall sculptures to compliment a zany industrial-themed miniature golf hole where players can take the “factory tour.” Kish is a St. Louis-based designer and builder. Twice a graduate of Lehigh University\, he also studied at the design think-tank SCI-Arc and has compiled extensive and overlapping portfolios in the fields of architecture\, fine art\, illustration and education. \nHole #2: MuseumCeption by City Museum and artists True Mead & Angelina Brown incorporates several exhibits displayed within the confines of City Museum that many who visit are not familiar with. Most know City Museum as a metalworks playground\, focused on reuse\, where structures and components of other once-upon-a-time buildings become the play place for children and adults of all ages. This new mini golf hole highlights collections and items being shown for the very first time! City Museum is a Maker Sponsor  \nHole #3: Sound Moves by the World Chess Hall of Fame is the first golf hole dedicated to the intersection of chess and music! It will include artifacts and media representing a wide range of musical genres\, both traditional and contemporary\, featuring a selection of the greatest and most influential musicians and chess players the world has seen. A full exhibition on this subject is currently on display at the World Chess Hall of Fame in the Central West End at 4652 Maryland Avenue. World Chess Hall of Fame is a Maker Sponsor \nHole #4: Candyman by LitShop is based on the beloved Roald Dahl children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the trio of films that followed. The immersive mini golf hole mimics the experiences of the movie characters when they first enter Wonka’s factory. Golfers can take selfies with a life-size cutout of the candyman himself\, Willy Wonka. LitShop is a non-profit organization that pairs literacy with hands-on making and building for girls and gender-expansive youth ages 10-16. Founded in 2019\, LitShop offers workshops in reading\, writing\, building and making through modalities such as design\, woodworking\, carpentry\, printmaking and fiber arts. \nHole #5: Putt your way upstream on Wally and Jacob Hauck’s Fly Fishing. Inspired by their love for fly fishing in Missouri’s beautiful streams\, the golf hole’s centerpiece features a large sculpture of a native trout. Over the last 15 years\, the Hauck’s have been working with a variety of agricultural companies to design and create large-scale sculptures depicting the properties of plants and scientific innovations for display at national trade shows. The Hauck’s are known for turning imaginative ideas into stunning realities\, and their talent will be on full display in this unique hole! \nHole #6:  If you hit it\, it’s a Drum by artists Kelsey and Philip Jordan encourage users to explore the act of creating sound and rhythm out of known musical and found instruments. The artists\, one a pianist and one a bassist\, believe that music is important in child development and exploration\, and is beneficial to all ages. Players “make some music” by taking one of the boomwhackers (tuned percussion tubes) around the column to play a little tune – just what they need to make that hole in one! \nHole #7: A Trip to the Moon by Paul Casey and Sarah Frost\nPlayers can choose one of two methods of travel to our favorite celestial body. Starting at adjacent points\, one route follows Jules Verne’s 19th century cannon\, while the other tracks the 1969 moon landing. Paul Casey was props master for over 25 years for Opera Theatre of St. Louis and at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis\, and has freelanced for local TV stations\, small theaters and trade show companies. Sarah Frost has created sculptures and installation art for 15 years. Originally trained as a painter\, she also enjoys working as a set painter at The Muny and other local theaters and returns to Golf the Galleries for a second season after last year’s audience-favorite installation\, Hole at the Pole. \nHole #8: The Anatomy of a House by Silas Coggeshall takes inspiration from literature and explores the age-old notion of a haunted house. What happens when the function of architecture and furniture becomes obtuse or even antagonistic to the human experience? What does the history of an object look like when made visible? What sort of presence does a home have when given the attributes of a living organism that has become malignant? Golfers must maneuver through an uncanny\, haunting and macabre depiction of the home in this delightfully chilling hole. \nHole #9: Kelsey and Philip Jordan have made the final hole a walk in the park: the dog park! Day at the Dog Park creates a sense of fun and play in one of the most genuinely joyful places for its users. Furry companions remind us to let our stresses go and find excitement in little things like TREATS! BALL! WALKS! There is always something new to explore and a story that’s being created – who was there before them and what were they doing? Together\, Phil and Kelsey Jordan are experienced architectural\, furniture\, construction and graphic designers. They return to Golf the Galleries for a 3rd year.

SUMMARY:Artists First: Connection\, Cohesion & Changeability
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Luke Allison\, Ricky Douglas\, David Fishman\, Julie Hart\, Nakia Jones\, Kevin Ngo\, Danny Speck and Dakota Thomas \nThe exhibition will feature 20 Artists First artists\, highlighting their passion and dedication to their art. Some of the artists have been involved with Artists First for over 10 years and consider the studio their haven. Each featured artist has a unique story to tell. \nArtists First is a non-profit open art studio that fosters independence through creative self-expression for adults with pervasive mental illness\, developmental disabilities\, and traumatic brain injury. The studio serves over 300 artists annually through a range of artistic programs that provide a creative platform for groups often confined to the fringes of society. With varying levels of supervision depending on the individual needs of the artists\, Artists First staff and volunteers promote participants’ self-esteem through their independent use of materials\, exploration of the world of creating art and socialization with their peers. \nOne featured artist has both Down syndrome and autism. She has difficulty seeing\, which directly correlates to the intricate mark making shown in her work. She then uses a palette knife instead of a brush to spread the paint out both vertically and horizontally. Once she has filled the canvas and the paint has dried\, she goes in with a color pencil\, meticulously holding each color pencil up to her face and examining it before deciding where to place it on the canvas. The colored pencil marks almost serve as stitches between the different colors of paint. The artist has grown tremendously since beginning at Artists First\, both artistically and developmentally. \n\n\n\n\nPLAN YOUR VISIT \nSeating Chart\nParking\nDirections\n\n\nSHARE THIS EVENT \n Email Event  Copy Link \n\n\n\nSPONSORSHIP \n\nSponsored by Christy Beckmann\, Nina Needleman and Peggy W. SUMMARY:The Sheldon's All-Star Chorus: Carnegie Hall Preview Concert
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed conductor Maria A. Ellis leads The Sheldon’s All-Star Chorus in a preview presentation of their Carnegie Hall repertoire with a very special performance of Robert Ray‘s Gospel Mass. Composed by the late\, renowned St. Louis composer\, the Gospel Mass takes the classical form of a choral mass and applies characteristics of American gospel music to the expressive and passionate text. The concert will open with solo performances by students who have been taking private voice lessons this semester. \nFREE\, but donations gratefully accepted. Proceeds will benefit the Chorus travel fund\, which will send the All-Stars to New York City this June to sing at Carnegie Hall! \nDonate now! Text “NYC” to 314.582.8848 or click here to donate \nEllis was invited by the prestigious New York City venue to curate and conduct a program featuring almost 100 singers – of which\, the All-Star Chorus will comprise 22. “When I was asked to conduct at Carnegie Hall\, it dawned on me that if I were to perform the Gospel Mass\, I could feature several components that are important to me\,” says Ellis. “A Black composer who is from St. Louis and was a professor at University of Missouri-St. Louis (which is where I received my music degree)\, Black soloists who are from St. Louis\, and I could take the singers from my All-Star Chorus. On one of the biggest stages in the world\, I could feature an authentic American genre of music as well as celebrate Black culture and St. Louis.” \nAn inclusive opportunity for high school singers to learn music literacy\, gain performance experience\, and build a community of students who have a strong passion for music\, the All-Star Chorus is unique in that it aspires to lessen the barriers required for chorus participation. The Sheldon’s All-Star Chorus program is free for all students who are in 9th through 12th grades. The Sheldon provides transportation to and from rehearsal for those students who do not have access to regular transportation. The All-Stars share a meal before every rehearsal. This practice brings the choir members together to socialize and create strong bonds of friendship. These intentional relationships help foster social-emotional learning\, self-awareness\, social skills and inclusion within the community that the chorus creates. \nAll-Star Chorus students represent school districts from across our region\, from St. Louis Public Schools to Mehlville; Granite City\, Illinois; New Haven High School; Kirkwood; Hazelwood; Grand Center Arts Academy; and Riverview Gardens. \nMaria A. Ellis is a passionate educator and conductor who is an active clinician\, adjudicator and presenter throughout the United States and abroad. She holds a B.M. in Music Education emphasis on Voice (K-12 Certified) Degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and is the host of the award winning-program Bach and Beyoncé on Classic 107.3. She serves as a host for the St. Louis Symphony “Live at Powell” broadcast\, and is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association\, National Association of Music Educators\, Missouri Alliance for Arts Education\, where she is chair of the RIDE (Race\, Inclusion\, Diversity & Equity) Committee.
