Participate in town-hall style discussion and an interactive exhibition\, enjoy a DJ set inspired by civil liberties\, and vote on drawings made for the Transform Your Hood campaign by students from Grand Center Arts Academy\, Saint Louis University\, Sumner High School\, Vashon High School\, and Washington University in St. Louis. The winner will receive a cash prize and the opportunity for their drawing to be turned into a poster and distributed to encourage voting efforts around the 2024 presidential election. Volunteers will be available to help eligible individuals register to vote in Missouri and Illinois. \n  \nSchedule \n\n5:00 pm – Bar opens; DJ set by Big Esco\n7:00 pm – Discussion with Brittany Raji Alberty\, Christopher Loss\, and Kelly McGowan\n8:00 pm – Announcement of Poster Design Competition Winner\n\n  \nSpeakers \nBrittany Raji Alberty is an award-winning outreach and engagement consultant with over a decade of experience in non-profit and small business campaigns. She helps organizations build revenue-generating relationships online that sell out events\, move products\, and cultivate engaged communities. Brittany is also the founder of RICH Mamas Club\, a thriving community with over 550 members nationwide. She has coached over 100 women business owners across the country. As a proud wife and mother\, Brittany believes that community is key to success. \nChristopher Loss is a local entrepreneur\, curator\, and visionary artist known for his distinctive blend of urban and natural themes. Over the last four years\, Christopher has passionately cultivated a vibrant art hub and community space in Saint Louis with his Cherokee Street storefront (Field Club Media) as a focal point for creativity and collaboration. His inclusive artistic approach draws inspiration from everyday experiences and public recreational areas\, while also fostering close collaborations with emerging local artists from diverse backgrounds across the city to amplify their voices and perspectives. Christopher’s work embodies accessibility and depth\, reflecting the essence of local inspirations and everyday life experiences. \nKelly McGowan is a proud St. Louisan and health equity advocate. Kelly has worked in New York and St. Louis to co-create various wellness programs addressing the health inequities that persist among Black Americans. Kelly has participated in various panels and has been featured in print and radio appearances addressing health equity efforts in the St. Louis region. Most recently\, Kelly has founded the new entity Transform 314. DESCRIPTION:Start the first Friday of the month with art\, music\, and culture in the Grand Center Arts District. \nThis month\, we’re pleased to host a special First Friday celebrating Disability Pride month\, which marks the anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. Visitors who are Deaf and hard of hearing are invited to kick off the event with a special happy hour in partnership with DEAF Inc. Next\, writer\, speaker\, and disability activist Katie Banister will provide a presentation including her personal story\, her vision as President of Access-4-All of “full inclusion where everyone counts and has access to a fulfilled and truly accessible life\,” and a discussion of the role that poetry and creativity play in turning anger into art. Finally\, the evening will feature a poetry workshop for all ages and abilities that provides an easy way to generate your own poem. \nASL interpretation is provided between 6:00–9:00pm. \nSchedule \n\n5:00 pm Doors open\n6:30–7:30 pm Deaf happy hour in collaboration with DEAF Inc.\, with complimentary drink tickets for members of the Deaf community\n7:30 pm Presentation from Katie Banister\n8:00 pm “Turning Anger into Art” poetry workshop\n\nAbout the presenter \nIn 1990\, Katie Rodriguez Banister survived an auto accident that left her a quadriplegic\, paralyzed from the chest down.  Katie is an author\, motivational speaker\, entertainer\, and disability educator. A native of Williamsburg\, Virginia\, she joined San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellowship Program in 2022 as Pianist/ Vocal Coach\, and is a Doctoral candidate in Collaborative Piano at Indiana University under the guidance of Kevin Murphy and Anne Epperson. \nMichelle Mariposa is a Filipino-Chinese mezzo-soprano whose mission as an artist is to communicate truth and beauty through music\, poetry\, and rhetoric. She is a winner of the 2023 Sullivan Award from the Sullivan Foundation. An enthusiast for new and underperformed music\, Michelle is a young artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis this year\, as well as with the Chicago Opera Theater and the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.

DESCRIPTION:This program takes inspiration from Paul Chan’s exhibition\, Breathers\, to explore the ways that artists harness the power of deep breathing to activate social connection. She has built and sustained an evolving career in the most acclaimed opera houses and concert stages of the world for over thirty years and continues to not only sustain her passion for this art form but also expand it to broader arenas as both stage director and master teacher. An internationally recognized artist herself\, she has sung leading roles at the major houses of the world\, including the Metropolitan Opera\, San Francisco Opera\, Royal Opera House\, La Scala\, Paris Opera\, Teatro Liceu\, Teatro Real\, Bayerische Staatsoper\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Canadian Opera Company\, Ravinia Festival\, Houston Grand Opera\, Dallas Opera\, and San Diego Opera. She is Artistic Director of the Young Artist Program for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. \nSimiya Sudduth (they/them + she/her) is a Black + Indigenous mother\, multidisciplinary artist and art educator. They maintain a fluid creative practice that primarily manifests in the realm of public art\, and social practice. Their work explores the intersections of healing\, ecology\, social justice\, and spirituality. Simiya’s expansive creative practice ranges from digital illustration\, designing and painting murals to experimental sound healing performances. \nDr. Timothy Huffman (he/him) is an associate professor at Saint Louis University in the department of Communication. His work explores how communication—such as compassion\, community\, and collaboration—can contribute to more just societies. He is the author of the book Qualitative Inquiry for Social Justice which focuses on how research and inquiry can play a role in fostering more inclusive\, humane\, and equitable community life. ​

DESCRIPTION:Birthplace of Creativity is a series of collaborative programs activating sites throughout the city referenced in Chambers’ exhibition\, including the St. Louis Public Library and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Dominic’s contemplative yet vibrant works reflect on how these institutions sparked wonder in him as a child. Through these programs\, viewers of all ages are invited to be similarly inspired. The special First Friday programming concludes at CAM with a guided tour\, music\, and art activities. \nThe self-guided audio tour of Dominic Chambers: Birthplace\, produced by CAM’s podcast-in-residence Speak Up St. Louis\, can be enjoyed at any time. \nSchedule of events:  \n\n10:30–11:30 am: Storytime at St. Louis Public Library’s Central Library\n\nParents are invited to bring their children to a special gathering for songs\, stories\, and activities about art and color inspired by Dominic Chambers. Ideal for children 6 years and under.  \n\n4:30–5:30 pm: Conversation at the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM)\n\nHear from the artist and Simon Kelly\, SLAM curator of modern and contemporary art\, about the works on view at SLAM that inspired a young Chambers during a visit to the museum on an elementary school field trip. \n\n5–9 pm: First Friday at CAM\n\nVisitors will be treated to a guided tour of Birthplace\, an invitation from Camp Sun Splash to create designs for a Fairground Park playground\, and an art activity led by Robert Sralla—Dominic Chambers’s former art teacher at Hazelwood East High School.
