SUMMARY:THE ANATOMICAL JEWEL. AN EXHIBITION BY RENEE CANETTA
DESCRIPTION:“The Anatomical Jewel” (2024) is an exhibition born from the struggles and expectations faced by women in modern society. This show transforms the mundane and painful into beautiful\, bejeweled sculptures. It explores the balance between hard truths and taboo ways of healing for women\, queer individuals\, and others in a homogenous society. My work reflects the early awareness of my own body and its impact on the world\, the uncomfortable experiences of being a woman\, and the societal expectations that control us. My sculptures create a safe space\, celebrating loudness and unapologetic expression. “The Anatomical Jewel” honors these journeys\, celebrates authenticity\, and aims to inspire a future where our voices are heard and our vulnerabilities are our strengths. ARTIST BIO: Renee is a self-taught artist known for her dramatic flair. Her first exhibition in 2013 earned her the Most Unique Award at the Sole Survivor Art Gallery Group Show\, leading to live painting demonstrations at Art On The Square and Midwest Salute To The Arts for three years. In 2015\, she debuted in a duet show\, “When Souls Collide\,” at Art Park Ost Gallery. She participated in group shows with Vodka Bacon Studios\, Poptropolis I\, and II\, and was the Cover Artist for Str8Up Magazine (Nov 2015) and Gesso Magazine (Jan 2018). Featured in Warm Soda Magazine and The Art Of Being Queer\, she recently began sculpting and spent the last two years on a body of work titled “The Anatomical Jewel.” Renee currently resides in St. Louis\, dedicating her free time to her art studio.

Over the years\, Thomas has utilized the arts as a form of advocacy and a conduit of social momentum. Cami currently provides freelancing services as a film and video producer and director throughout the Midwest and Los Angeles. SUMMARY:"VEILED REALITIES" BY NABIL MOUSA
DESCRIPTION:The concept of the veil as concealing and revealing of a personal and global identity continues to interest me deeply. It is a charged item\, both physically and metaphorically\, as it brings about a constant source of fascination\, fear\, curiosity\, judgment\, and sometimes contempt. The veil plays a large role in identity politics around gender\, religion\, political leanings\, and liberalism. It is an open signifier\, culturally and religiously. In our current political climate\, it is a divisive tool\, depending on which American community one happens to be born or live in. It is used to scare\, and alienate\, but also to create. In my artistic journey\, I have sought to explore the profound interplay between the seen and the unseen\, the tangible and the intangible. My work is a tapestry woven from the threads of identity\, vulnerability\, and resilience. Central to my practice is the exploration of the veil\, a symbol that conceals and reveals\, carrying layers of meaning both personal and universal. \nThe concept of the veil as a cultural\, religious\, and political signifier continues to captivate my imagination. It is a charged item\, evoking emotions ranging from fascination to fear\, curiosity to contempt. In a world marked by identity politics\, the veil plays a pivotal role in discussions surrounding gender\, religion\, political affiliations\, and notions of liberalism. \nIt is an open signifier\, both culturally and religiously\, capable of evoking deeply contrasting emotions within different American communities. \nAs a gay man of Arab descent\, I have chosen to embrace the veil as a wellspring of inspiration and symbolism. Drawing from my cultural heritage\, I employ elements of the veil to engage in political and social commentary on the state of our world and the United States. \nThe veil\, for me\, extends beyond the political and social realm; it touches upon my personal journey. Growing up as a closeted gay Arab male\, I wore an invisible veil for much of my life\, one laden with fear\, shame\, and guilt. \nThis exhibition invites viewers to explore the intricate layers of the veil and the myriad emotions it elicits. Through sculptures and paintings\, we delve into the intersections of identity\, the power of vulnerability\, and the strength of resilience. My hope is that this body of work not only sparks dialogue but also fosters empathy and understanding. Together\, we can explore the invisible veils that we all wear and find common threads in our human experiences. \nIn 2017-18\, Mousa installed his solo exhibition\, American Landscapes\, at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn\, Michigan. This series of paintings explored LGBTQ civil rights\, including the struggle for gay marriage in the United States. Mousa’s position as a gay\, Arab-American artist resulted in front page coverage of The New York Times Sunday art section. \n– Nabil Mousa \nWalk-In Gallery Hours at High Low are every day\, from 8am – 3pm. The veil plays a large role in identity politics around gender\, religion\, political leanings\, and liberalism. It is an open signifier\, culturally and religiously. In our current political climate\, it is a divisive tool\, depending on which American community one happens to be born or live in. It is used to scare\, and alienate\, but also to create. In my artistic journey\, I have sought to explore the profound interplay between the seen and the unseen\, the tangible and the intangible. My work is a tapestry woven from the threads of identity\, vulnerability\, and resilience. Central to my practice is the exploration of the veil\, a symbol that conceals and reveals\, carrying layers of meaning both personal and universal. \nThe concept of the veil as a cultural\, religious\, and political signifier continues to captivate my imagination. It is a charged item\, evoking emotions ranging from fascination to fear\, curiosity to contempt. In a world marked by identity politics\, the veil plays a pivotal role in discussions surrounding gender\, religion\, political affiliations\, and notions of liberalism. \nIt is an open signifier\, both culturally and religiously\, capable of evoking deeply contrasting emotions within different American communities. \nAs a gay man of Arab descent\, I have chosen to embrace the veil as a wellspring of inspiration and symbolism. Drawing from my cultural heritage\, I employ elements of the veil to engage in political and social commentary on the state of our world and the United States. \nThe veil\, for me\, extends beyond the political and social realm; it touches upon my personal journey. Growing up as a closeted gay Arab male\, I wore an invisible veil for much of my life\, one laden with fear\, shame\, and guilt. \nThis exhibition invites viewers to explore the intricate layers of the veil and the myriad emotions it elicits. Through sculptures and paintings\, we delve into the intersections of identity\, the power of vulnerability\, and the strength of resilience. My hope is that this body of work not only sparks dialogue but also fosters empathy and understanding. Together\, we can explore the invisible veils that we all wear and find common threads in our human experiences. \nIn 2017-18\, Mousa installed his solo exhibition\, American Landscapes\, at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn\, Michigan. This series of paintings explored LGBTQ civil rights\, including the struggle for gay marriage in the United States. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Journalism degree and spent the next fifteen years as a copywriter in advertising and public relations in Palo Alto\, Denver\, and Houston before pursuing a freelance career and teaching at the University of Missouri and Stephens College in Columbia\, Missouri. DESCRIPTION:Nicaraguan-American visual artist Quinn Antoniio Briceño discusses his identity and background\, as well as how his work reflects his family history and personal experiences. He will share with us some of his individual art pieces and their meaning through a narrated slide show. Quinn Antonio Briceño\, a Nicaraguan-American artist in St. Louis\, earned his bachelor’s degree in fine art from the San Francisco Art Institute (2017) and a master’s degree from the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art (2022). Notable achievements include winning the Ann Metzger National Biennial in 2019 and being a finalist for the AXA Art Prize in 2021. He has been featured in publications such as All the Art\, Friend of the Artist (Issue 10)\, St. Louis Magazine\, Design St. Louis\, and New American Paintings (No. 155\, 165\, 167). DESCRIPTION: Born and raised in St. Louis\, Vincent Varvel started playing music early on\, studying piano\, clarinet\, and organ. He began playing guitar at age 15 and attended college at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville\, where he had the opportunity to perform with jazz greats such as Michael Brecker\, Peter Erskine\, and Dan Gottlieb. He graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance. Varvel began his professional career while in college\, freelancing with many different performers in the St. Louis area. Since then he has toured the United States and Europe with various ensembles in addition to leading his own jazz group performing his original compositions. Recently\, he has performed classical music with the Kingsbury Ensemble\, Chamber Project St. Louis\, and soprano Stella Markou. Pop and Jazz artists he has performed and recorded with with include the Peter Mayer Group\, Erin Bode\, Sam Moore(Sam & Dave)\, Lou Christie\, The Shirelles\, among many others. He has recorded four albums as a leader: Pictures and Postcards(2000)\, …Not a Creature Was Stirring…(2004)\, Third Person(2015)\, and the most recent\, Your Song(2018). His original music has been heard on satellite radio and cable television. He is currently Instructor of Guitar at Washington University in St. Louis\, along with maintaning a private teaching practice and performing regularly with his own group and as a sideman.

Cunningham has toured throughout the U.S. and has recorded with Lisa Cameron\, Damon Smith\, Claire Rousay\, Chris Trull (under the Apathist! moniker)\, Mark Shippy\, Thom Nguyen\, Patrick Shiroishi\, Jessica Ackerley\, and Weasel Walter. DESCRIPTION:Cameron Jamarr will speak some about his artistic work\, the influences behind some of his writings\, and his artistic point of view. Cameron will follow this with a discussion of the power of writing\, storytelling\, and creating transformative experiences of the written word\, and share some of his original writings. Cameron Jamarr is a Kranzberg Arts Foundation 2024 Artist in Residence\, in recognition of his work as a professional actor\, writer\, director\, and filmmaker. Cameron is also Founding Producer of Soul Siren Playhouse\, a theater arts production company inspired by social consciousness and responsibility. A St. Louis native\, he has worked internationally and abroad\, creating original works emphasizing the exploration of culture\, identity\, and societal transformation. Cameron has written and produced original works including screenplays\, stage plays\, adaptations\, spoken word poetry\, and other narrative forms. Recently\, he presented an original piece as a guest artist at the St. Louis Art Museum in honor of their 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Celebration. Learn about the community through the words of young leaders. Youth\, ages 16-25\, lead meaningful dialogues that inspire original content in mentor-led workshops based on participants’ lived experiences in economically disadvantaged\, high crime areas. Podcasts focus on the streets\, gun violence\, and finding solutions to issues that are coming at our youth hard. The project goal is to gain greater understanding of the needs and desires of the youth served and to give them an amplified voice to create needed changes in society\, to support youth in a successful transition to adulthood\, and to reduce youth crime in St. Louis.
