SUMMARY:Robbin\, from the Hood
DESCRIPTION:Soul Siren Playhouse presents the Midwest Regional Premiere of “Robbin\, from the Hood” by Marlow Wyatt. Told with humor\, heart\, and grit\, this new work is a bold call to action and an unflinching response to contemporary American Capitalism. Follow Robbin\, a sharp-tongued 17-year-old math genius\, and Juan\, her loyal best friend\, who land coveted spots in a corporate career training program that promises a way out of poverty and the inner city. Yet once they begin climbing the ladder of success in the company\, they soon discover that their new lives will come at unexpected costs to their families and their neighborhood. As Robbin’s hunger for justice clashes with Juan’s hope for stability\, their friendship and futures are tested in what becomes a gripping story about race\, class\, and the rising price of chasing the American Dream.\nA play by The People. SUMMARY:Promenade: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Seriously Hilarious 1969 Experimental Musical Comedy! Come for the Party! Stay for the War! \nNew Line Theatre continues its 34th season with the uproarious 1969 experimental musical comedy PROMENADE at the Marcelle Theater in the Grand Center Arts District. \nOne of the biggest off Broadway hits of 1969 boasts an absurdist story\, a diverse cast\, and features a script and lyrics by Latina playwright-director María Irene Fornés\, the “mother of avant-garde theatre\,” with music by gay minister Al Carmines. With a tiny budget\, PROMENADE debuted at the Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village before moving off Broadway. Beneath its dizzying comedy and catchy songs\, it explores the ways in which social class can both liberate and imprison us\, exploring themes big issues along the way\, like wealth inequality\, law and order\, war\, corruption\, body image\, gender\, sexuality\, and more. With many of these issues still deeply relevant today\, this show has grown powerfully relevant again. In 2019\, PROMENADE was presented as part of New York City Center’s Encores! Series.

Series.
