DESCRIPTION:After graduating from Northern Illinois University\, keyboardist and composer Brian Simpson relocated to Los Angeles where he was soon playing alongside musicians Gerald Albright and Norman Brown and eventually on a world tour with Janet Jackson. It was his tenure with George that led to working with a variety of artists\, from James Ingram and Anita Baker to Dave Koz and Wayman Tisdale. The popularity of his music worldwide has kept Mr. Simpson on a seemingly endless world tour which in 2019 included Japan\, Australia\, Korea\, Indonesia\, Philippines\, Spain\, United Kingdom\, Portugal\, and South Africa. With writing and performing credits on R&B chart-topping albums and Smooth Jazz Airplay charts\, it’s clear why Brian is the veteran Music Director of so many jazz events. SUMMARY:SLSO: Live at The Sheldon: Echoes of Home
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique chamber music series curated and performed by SLSO musicians. Experience new and treasured repertoire masterfully brought to life on The Sheldon stage in a dynamic lineup of instruments and players.\nCurated by Celeste Golden Andrews\, Second Associate Concertmaster\, and Melissa Brooks\, Associate Principal Cello. \nMemories and traditions echo throughout this program\, revisited and revised. Shelley Washington’s dazzling string quartet evokes—in the composer’s own words—“where we gathered. Home of the heart\, heart of the home.” A radical arrangement of a G.F. Handel suite makes a new home for classical traditions. Antonín Dvořák retains his Bohemian roots while Vaughan Williams harkens back to memories of birds taking wing. A new work by award-winning Missouri teenage composer Henry Rusten invites listeners to hear echoes from a new generation. \nCeleste Golden Andrews\, violin (curator)\nMelissa Brooks\, cello (curator)\nKristin Ahlstrom\, violin\nAlejandro Valdepeñas\, viola\nDavid DeRiso\, Double Bass \nG.F. SUMMARY:SLSO: Live at The Sheldon: No Borders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique chamber music series curated and performed by SLSO musicians. Experience new and treasured repertoire masterfully brought to life on The Sheldon stage in a dynamic lineup of instruments and players.\nCurated by Xiaoxiao Qiang\, Violin\, and Tzuying Huang\, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet. \nMusic needs no passport. Composers cross geographic barriers\, borrowing ideas from a world of musical cultures. Sergei Prokofiev visits the U.S. and encounters a Russian sextet devoted to Jewish folk music for whom he writes an exuberant new work. Contemporary American composer Paul Schoenfield is drawn to Eastern European music\, mixing themes from klezmer\, Cossack dances\, and military marches. In contrast\, Amy Beach’s Theme and Variations is a sublime example of late-Romantic grandeur. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnole contains both Russian and Spanish melodies and rhythms. \nSergei Prokofiev: Overture on Hebrew Themes \nSeda Balci: New Work (World premiere) \nPaul Schoenfield: Trio for Clarinet\, Violin\, and Piano \nAmy Beach: Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet \nNikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (arr. SUMMARY:Steve Treviño
DESCRIPTION:Comedian Steve Treviño is “America’s Favorite Husband.” He can “speak wife fluently\,” he never calls “the guys” for help on a home project\, and he knows better than to “make his own decisions\,” since decision-making is a privilege reserved solely for his wife\, Renae. \nHis relatable approach affirms his status as one of the country’s fastest-rising comics\, viewed over 223 million times\, selling out shows coast-to-coast\, amassing over 2 million total social media followers\, and headlining specials for Amazon\, NETFLIX\, Showtime\, and more. \nHe started cutting his teeth in Dallas\, Texas\, working as a door guy at the Improv and earning himself a spot to open the iconic 2001 Three Amigos Comedy Tour. He quickly earned his stripes and an audience on the comedy club circuit\, and he began headlining on his own by the age of 25. He delivered side-splitting performances on The Late Late Show and Comics Unleashed\, and produced and wrote for international GRAMMY® Award-winning superstar Pitbull’s La Esquina. \nHis first Showtime special\, Grandpa Joe’s Son\, staked out a spot in the Nielsen Top 20. He funded\, produced\, and shot his 2014 runaway NETFLIX hit Relatable. To promote the special\, he uploaded a clip titled “When Your Wife Comes Home From Shopping.” It exploded\, generating 56 million views on Facebook alone and paving the way for heavily shared clips such as “When You Ask Your Wife If She Wants McDonald’s” (21 million views) and “When Going to Vegas With Your\nWife Goes Wrong” (4 million views). Co-produced by Nacelle\, the follow-up special\, Steve Trevino ’Til Death\, arrived in 2018. Steve maintained his momentum by broadening his social media presence through fans redoing bits of his comedy specials and posting them to TikTok. In less than two years\, that grassroots effort helped him build a worldwide fanbase on the platform from the ground up\, amassing 4.8 million likes and over 50 million views on the platform\, while also\nchanging up his entire social media game. \nIn 2020\, he and his wife\, Renae\, unveiled a joint weekly podcast entitled “Steve Treviño and Captain Evil\,” that has generated over 1.5 million views/streams and is now in Season 3. He also filmed his fourth self-produced comedy special\, My Life in Quarantine\, which was picked up by Amazon Prime. The once-in-a-lifetime pandemic special was shot in front of a masked\, socially distant crowd and focused on the ups and downs of getting through quarantine. \nHe regularly raises money for Helicopters for Heroes\, an organization benefiting veterans\, for whom he helped raise over $1.5 million in the past two years. \nSteve’s self produced fifth special filmed in Waco\, Texas\, entitled I Speak Wife\, independently released on Friday\, October 21\, for free exclusively to his global audience on YouTube.

SUMMARY:The Sheldon Presents: Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder
DESCRIPTION:Fifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country  music history. In 2018\, a landmark year\, Skaggs was also awarded membership into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame\, the IBMA Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and country music’s greatest honor\, the Country Music Hall of Fame. Most recently\, he was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Arts in 2020 for his contributions to the American music industry. \nThe Sheldon is pleased to host a pre-show buffet dinner before the concert\, provided by local restaurant Salt and Smoke. Dinner buffet is $35 per person. SUMMARY:The Steward Family Presents: The Marvin Gaye-Bobby Scott Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, Motown R&B recording artist Marvin Gaye and singer\, songwriter\, and arranger Bobby Scott met at a recording studio in New York City to record a group of ballads that Marvin had previously asked Bobby Scott to arrange for him. The story goes that halfway through\, Marvin abruptly stopped the recording session. According to David Ritz\, the author of Marvin’s autobiography\, Marvin himself said he stopped the session because although he felt the arrangements were beautiful\, he also thought his vocals were not measuring up\, and he froze\, thinking the ballads would flop. However\, later on\, Marvin realized that at that time\, he had more suffering to do before he could truly feel the emotions required to sing those songs.\nTen years later\, after the divorce of his wife Anna and his blossoming love affair with his soon-to-be wife Janis\, Marvin sang those Bobby Scott arrangements and packaged them in an album called “Ballads.” However\, the record company rejected the album and didn’t release the songs until after his death. Marvin never performed the songs he and Bobby Scott collaborated on. That is\, until now!\nLadies and Gentlemen\, The Steward Family Foundation presents the “Jazz in My Soul-Marvin Gaye-Bobby Scott Collaboration\,” a 9-piece band consisting of St. Louis’s most gifted musicians and singer Brian Owens as Marvin Gaye.\nAll proceeds go to “The Haven of Grace\,” an organization serving pregnant and homeless women. Enjoy the concert and thank you for coming. The “Jazz in My Soul-Marvin Gaye-Bobby Scott Collaboration” is derived from the stage play “Jazz in My Soul-A Marvin Gaye Fantasy” by St. Louis playwright Edie Anderson (aka Your Lady Edie B.). \nBRIAN OWENS as MARVIN GAYE \n\nPiano – Adaron “Pops” Jackson\nTrombone – Brett Stamps\nDrums – Demarius Hicks\nTrumpet – Danny Campbell\nGuitar – Eric Slaughter\nTenor Sax-Harvey Lockhart\nAlto Sax – Jason Swagler\nBass – Jeffrey Anderson\nBaritone Sax – Kwanae Johnson\n\nActor A.J.S.R  as Mickey Stevenson

SUMMARY:Jazz St. Louis Presents Paquito D'Rivera & Chucho Valdés\, Together Again! at the Sheldon
DESCRIPTION:Jazz St. Louis is thrilled to announce the 2024 fundraising event Together Again! at the Steward Center\, home of Jazz St. Louis\, on September 18\, 2024\, and at The Sheldon on September 19\, 2024. This two-night fundraising event supports Jazz St. Louis and helps secure the future of Jazz St. Louis’ impactful programs for people in the St. Louis area. The organization’s programming has established an extensive record of developing future leaders in music\, while also preserving and advancing the treasured American art form of Jazz through community engagement efforts and transformative live jazz experiences.\n\n\n\nValdés and D’Rivera first met in 1962. Both were child prodigies\, and both were sons of musical families. They worked together in Havana’s Musical Theatre Orchestra\, and in the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music. They also made their first professional recordings together. They’ve both won multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy awards for their recordings. This reunion between the two has been bubbling in recent years\, including the release of the album I Missed You Too in 2022\, and a 50th anniversary performance of iconic Afro-Cuban jazz band Irakere earlier this year\, which D’Rivera and Valdés formed in 1973 with Arturo Sandoval. The band’s sound was revolutionary for Cuba and revelatory for the Americans who would hear them on the band’s first tour in the United States in 1979. This particular reunion in St. Louis offers two exceptionally rare opportunities to see them in two of the most revered venues in the city.\n\n\nAn after-party will be held at Steward Center\, home of Jazz St. Louis\, located at 3536 Washington Ave.\, on September 19\, 2024. The after-party is following the performance at the Sheldon from 9pm-12am. Tickets are available at $100 and include a dance floor\, live band\, one drink ticket\, and a complimentary dessert bar. You do not need to have purchased tickets for either benefit concert to purchase tickets for the after-party.

SUMMARY:The Sheldon Presents: Neko Case
DESCRIPTION:Is there another songwriter so fearless and inventive?  Neko Case returns to The Sheldon demonstrating how she has bent decades of pop music into new shapes.  Neko Case wields her voice like a kiss and her metaphors like a baseball bat. She has cast the fishing net of her career wide—from Seattle and Vancouver to Chicago and Stockholm\, setting up her home base on a farm in New England.   \nGathering power year after year\, Neko sings with the fierce abandon of a newborn infant crying in a basket in the woods. Since escaping the labels of country and Americana\, the gorgeous train-whistle vocals of her early career sit submerged in her later style\, where their ghost can appear any minute. When her voice jumps an octave\, it’s almost visible\, like sparks at night. “I never knew where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do with my voice\,” she says\, “but I just wanted to do it so bad.”  \nA $1 historic preservation fee will be added to each ticket to help maintain The Sheldon for future generations.

SUMMARY:The Sheldon Presents: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Gillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty-five years\, and she and her musical partner David Rawlings are a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. They have been hailed by Pitchfork as “modern masters of American folk” and “protectors of the American folk song” by Rolling Stone. \nAfter moving to Nashville in the early 1990s\, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Her career continued to flourish as her 1996 debut Revival\, produced by T Bone Burnett\, was released to critical acclaim. Firmly on the roots music map following the release\, Welch followed up that GRAMMY nominated album release with 1998’s Hell Among The Yearlings\, a stark duet record with Rawlings\, further solidifying the duo as a force in the folk music scene. \nFor her work as executive producer as well as a performer and songwriter on the eight times platinum O Brother\, Where Art Thou? soundtrack\, Welch was awarded the Album of the Year GRAMMY\, and was simultaneously nominated for her own Time (The Revelator) which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums of the 2000s and is widely considered by critics to be one of the best albums of all time. This release was Welch-Rawlings’ first on their own record label\, Acony Records\, helping to establish the duo’s fierce commitment to independent music. \n2003’s Soul Journey was the pair’s first experimentation with a fuller\, electric sound\, which paved the way for the Dave Rawlings Machine project\, and their first release under Rawlings’ name (A Friend of A Friend\, 2009)\, which was accompanied by a time period of heavy touring and headlining major festivals while biding their time to return to the duet sound the two were traditionally known for. 2011’s The Harrow and The Harvest  was nominated for for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Engineered Album at the GRAMMYs\, and won Artist of the Year (Welch) and was nominated for Instrumentalist of the Year (Rawlings) at the Americana Honors & Awards. The album garnered glowing reviews and topped multiple year end “Best Of” lists. \nIn celebration of the twenty year anniversary of the Welch-Rawlings partnership\, the two launched an archival branch of Acony Records\, entitled Boots\, dedicated to releasing outtakes\, demos\, bootlegs\, and live recordings from their copious vault. Thus far they have released five album’s worth of music with more on the way. \nIn 2018\, Welch was the first musician to receive the Thomas Wolfe Prize for Literature. The award is bestowed by University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Department of English & Comparative Literature and recognizes contemporary writers with a distinguished body of work. 2019 saw Welch and Rawlings nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song” where they performed their singing cowboy duet\, written for the most recent Coen brothers’ film\, live on the show. In 2020 the duo released All the Good Times\, the first album under both their names\, and won the GRAMMY for the Best Folk Album. \nRecently\, they were crowned with the Berklee American Masters Award and honored by Americana Music Association with a Lifetime Achievement for Songwriting. \nWelch and Rawlings continue to tour the world in support of their music while simultaneously writing and lending their talents to countless fellow artists’ projects. They are continuously working to release their acclaimed catalog on phonograph records of the highest possible fidelity.

SUMMARY:The Sheldon Presents: Amy Helm
DESCRIPTION:When creating her fourth album\, the soulful and reflective Silver City\, Amy Helm was guided by her North Star: women’s voices. “Women whispering\, singing\, shouting their stories – speaking the truth. I wanted to dig into that inherited narrative and reach for what I could.” The epistolary anthology is a collection of conversations that travel through time\, exploring and celebrating womanhood in all its complexities. Silver City blends the folk twang of Helm’s childhood with gospel and soul\, drawing inspiration from varied stories: the life of Helm’s great-grandmother\, the story of a young fan struggling with substance abuse\, Helm’s own life as a single mother and hard-touring singer. Recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock\, New York\, and produced by Josh Kaufman\, the album finds Helm exploring themes of womanhood\, single motherhood\, and personal struggles\, offering songs that are deeply personal and narrative-driven. With Silver City\, Helm embraces the beauty of age\, survival\, and transformation through her powerful\, story-rooted performances.

SUMMARY:Dailey & Vincent
DESCRIPTION:Grand Ole Opry Members\, five-time GRAMMY® Award winners individually\, three-time GRAMMY® Award nominees collectively\, four-time DOVE Award winners and winners of 35 IBMA Awards altogether (including 3-time IBMA Entertainer of the Year Award winners and 3-Time Vocal Group of the Year Award winners)\, Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent (and their world-class band) offer a unique and modernized spin on ‘American music’ – “the best of country\, bluegrass and gospel this side of heaven” (USA Today) – the duo has played across the globe\, taking the stage at iconic venues including the Ryman Auditorium and Carnegie Hall. Their most recent live CD\, “Dailey & Vincent ALIVE\,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts and remained at the top position for over 15 weeks. Dailey & Vincent’s first-ever Christmas album\, “Dailey & Vincent: The Sounds of Christmas” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and No. 8 on the Billboard Holiday Chart\, landing right behind Michael Bublé and Pentatonix as the only country\, bluegrass and gospel act in the Top Ten. \nAll ticket prices include a $1 historical preservation fee.
