SUMMARY:Downstream Discourse: An Ongoing Conversation about Watershed and Human Health
DESCRIPTION:Location: Chain of Rocks Park \nConvene at the Mississippi River with Rafael Sousa-Sommo and Andi Gaither of the Native Women’s Care Circle (NWCC) to explore the connections of plants\, rivers\, and human life\, and honor Indigenous stewardship of our watersheds. After an opening ceremony\, participants will be welcomed into a conversation about past stewardship\, invasive plants and pollution in the modern era\, and how to pursue more sustainable options for river health. This event is open to all ages\, and will include the opportunity to create seed bombs and share resources and conservation activities provided by NWCC and Great Rivers Greenway. \nRegistration is encouraged; please click here to sign up. \nThis event is part of a series of gatherings offered in conjunction with Make the River Present. \nNative Women’s Care Circle is an inclusive\, Indigenous-led\, grassroots prayer group that practices stewardship of the lands and waters. This event celebrates Great Rivers Biennial 2024 artist Saj Issa and traditional Palestinian cultural forms that relate to the artist’s exhibition. \nSchedule \n\n5:00 pm Drinks and specialty cocktails available for purchase from AO&Co\n6:00–7:30pm Hands-on art making exploring tatreez\, a form of traditional Palestinian embroidery\, led by Saj Issa\n7:30 pm Oud performance by Ronnie Malley\n\n  \n\nAbout the artists \nSaj Issa (she/her) received a BFA from Webster University\, St. Louis\, and a MFA at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Growing up between St. Louis and Ramallah\, Palestine\, her practice is an exploration of displacement\, identity\, social issues\, and consumerism. Issa provokes\, informs\, and entertains viewers with her work\, which has been exhibited at Felix Art Fair in Los Angeles\, Materials Fair in Mexico City\, the exhibition Many at the Craft Contemporary Museum\, Los Angeles\, and most recently\, Your Refuge installed on the exterior of The Luminary as a part of psa-stl. Issa is a recipient of the 2022 NCECA Graduate Student Fellowship\, and has been selected to appear in New American Paintings\, No. 159 & 165 MFA Annual Issue. She has been an artist-in-residence at Craft Alliance Center of Art and Design\, St. Louis\, and Belger Crane Yard Studio\, Kansas City. \nRonnie Malley (he/him) is a multi-instrumentalist musician on oud\, guitar\, keyboards\, and percussion\, a theatrical performer\, producer\, and educator. He has collaborated with international artists\, composed and consulted for many cultural music projects in film and theater\, appeared as a guest artist on several works\, and is executive director of Intercultural Music Production in Chicago.

SUMMARY:Crafting Connections with Webster University
DESCRIPTION:Create your own clay sculptures inspired by works in the exhibition Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay. This workshop is hosted in collaboration with Webster University\, so participants will start the day at CAM with an exhibition tour by Director of Learning and Engagement Michelle Dezember followed by lunch. Next\, participants will join ceramicist Lindsay Pichaske at Webster University for a hands-on workshop. The class will explore figurative sculpture\, texture\, and personal storytelling as well as discuss surface treatments and firing techniques. \nLunch\, a small sketchbook\, and materials for the clay workshop are included in the registration cost. Participants should plan to bring a smock\, apron\, or clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. \nSchedule \n\n11:30 am: Program begins at CAM with a tour of Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay\n12:00 pm: Lunch\n12:30 pm: Participants make their own way to Webster University\n1:00–4:00 pm: Ceramics workshop\n\nWorkshop space is limited. She is represented by Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis and exhibits broadly; recent shows were held at Jane Hartsook Gallery\, the Fuller Craft Museum\, and the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2013\, she received an Emerging Artist Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. Lindsay is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Webster University.

DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Melandri\, CAM Executive Director and co-organizer of the exhibition Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay\, for a conversation with Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy\, curator\, writer\, and arts administrator who wrote a scholarly essay for the exhibition’s accompanying publication. The two will discuss Sawada’s singular sculptures and the various avenues for appreciating and contextualizing his work. \nAs part of the evening\, Artists First\, an inclusive\, non-profit art studio\, will showcase works of art created in response to Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay. Artists First empowers artists of all abilities and uses creative self-expression to build equity\, equality\, and empowerment in the Saint Louis region and beyond. Artists from Artists First took inspiration from Shinichi Sawada’s exhibition and created multimedia artworks in response. The multimedia sculptures represent the beauty of diversity and inclusion. Doors open at 5:30 pm. \n  \n\nAbout the speakers \nAngelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy (she/her) is a New York-based curator\, writer\, art historian\, and arts and grants administrator. Her practice advocates for underrepresented communities\, stories\, materials\, and approaches in the art world. Her research investigates the “aesthetics of optimism\,” the subversive power of humor\, cuteness\, and leisure as tools of protest. She is the Director of the New York City Department of Transportation Art (NYC DOT Art). Vizcarrondo-Laboy also served as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD\,) NY\, where from 2016 to 2022\, she was part of MAD’s curatorial team\, helping organize over twenty exhibitions and projects. During her time there\, she also led MAD’s Burke Prize\, a prestigious contemporary craft award. Vizcarrondo-Laboy authored the essay “Shinichi Sawada: An Open-Ended Question” for the exhibition catalog Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay. \nLisa Melandri (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis\, the region’s premier contemporary\, non-collecting art institution. Since joining CAM in 2012\, Lisa has brought both emerging and established artists from around the globe to St. Louis\, and has organized such outstanding exhibitions at CAM as Mickalene Thomas: Mentors\, Muses\, and Celebrities; Salvatore Scarpitta: Racing Cars; Sanford Biggers; Amy Sherald; Christine Corday: RELATIVE POINTS; and Kathy Butterly: Out of one\, many / Headscapes. Melandri co-organized the exhibition Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay with Jen Sudul Edwards\, Ph.D.\, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at The Mint Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an intimate dinner by acclaimed chef Nick Bognar\, executive chef and owner of indo and Sado. Known for his personal interpretation of Thai\, Japanese\, and Southeast Asian cuisines\, Bognar will take inspiration from our fall/winter 2024 exhibitions and create a one-of-a-kind culinary experience at CAM. \nTickets are $125 for non-members; $100 for CAM members. Space is limited. Maximum 4 tickets per order. \nThis event is sold out. \nNick Bognar is the executive chef and co-owner of indo\, the modern Asian restaurant in St. Louis’ Botanical Heights neighborhood\, and Sado\, a new sushi concept\, in the historical Italian Neighborhood of The Hill in St. Louis—the first Asian restaurant in the neighborhood. Indo’s menu is reflective of Bognar’s identity as a Thai-American chef and showcases his talents in Japanese\, Thai and Southeast Asian cooking. Nick was just named a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef Midwest. In 2019\, he was a James Beard semifinalist for Rising Star Chef of the Year and opened indo late June at 1641 Tower Grove Ave. GQ named Indo one of the Best New Restaurant of 2020. Nick was one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chef’s 2020 and has earned two James Beard Foundation nominations for Best New Restaurant and Rising Star Chef. \nBognar grew up in St. Louis helping with his Thai mother’s restaurant Nippon Tei\, one of the first Japanese restaurants in the city. He was managing and operating the sushi bar at Nippon Tei before graduating from culinary school at St. Louis Community College- Forest Park. He went on to work at Austin’s Uchiko and served as executive chef at E+O Kitchen in Cincinnati before a long trip around Thailand and Cambodia. In 2017\, Bognar returned home to St. Louis to reinvigorate the sushi menu at Nippon Tei.

Brittany is also the founder of RICH Mamas Club\, a thriving community with over 550 members nationwide. She has coached over 100 women business owners across the country. As a proud wife and mother\, Brittany believes that community is key to success. \nChristopher Loss is a local entrepreneur\, curator\, and visionary artist known for his distinctive blend of urban and natural themes. Over the last four years\, Christopher has passionately cultivated a vibrant art hub and community space in Saint Louis with his Cherokee Street storefront (Field Club Media) as a focal point for creativity and collaboration. His inclusive artistic approach draws inspiration from everyday experiences and public recreational areas\, while also fostering close collaborations with emerging local artists from diverse backgrounds across the city to amplify their voices and perspectives. Next\, writer\, speaker\, and disability activist Katie Banister will provide a presentation including her personal story\, her vision as President of Access-4-All of “full inclusion where everyone counts and has access to a fulfilled and truly accessible life\,” and a discussion of the role that poetry and creativity play in turning anger into art.
