A native of Williamsburg\, Virginia\, she joined San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellowship Program in 2022 as Pianist/ Vocal Coach\, and is a Doctoral candidate in Collaborative Piano at Indiana University under the guidance of Kevin Murphy and Anne Epperson. \nMichelle Mariposa is a Filipino-Chinese mezzo-soprano whose mission as an artist is to communicate truth and beauty through music\, poetry\, and rhetoric. She is a winner of the 2023 Sullivan Award from the Sullivan Foundation. An enthusiast for new and underperformed music\, Michelle is a young artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis this year\, as well as with the Chicago Opera Theater and the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.

DESCRIPTION:This program takes inspiration from Paul Chan’s exhibition\, Breathers\, to explore the ways that artists harness the power of deep breathing to activate social connection. The evening includes guided breathwork with artist Simiya Sudduth\, a conversation about how opera singers use breath to animate artistic expression with Patricia Racette\, and a discussion about the metaphor of breathing as creative social exchange guided by Dr. Timothy Huffman. \nDoors open at 5:30 pm; refreshments will be provided. Please register for a free ticket by clicking here. \n  \nAbout the Presenters \nPatricia Racette (she/her) has been heralded a preeminent singing actress of our time. She has built and sustained an evolving career in the most acclaimed opera houses and concert stages of the world for over thirty years and continues to not only sustain her passion for this art form but also expand it to broader arenas as both stage director and master teacher. An internationally recognized artist herself\, she has sung leading roles at the major houses of the world\, including the Metropolitan Opera\, San Francisco Opera\, Royal Opera House\, La Scala\, Paris Opera\, Teatro Liceu\, Teatro Real\, Bayerische Staatsoper\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Canadian Opera Company\, Ravinia Festival\, Houston Grand Opera\, Dallas Opera\, and San Diego Opera. She is Artistic Director of the Young Artist Program for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. \nSimiya Sudduth (they/them + she/her) is a Black + Indigenous mother\, multidisciplinary artist and art educator. They maintain a fluid creative practice that primarily manifests in the realm of public art\, and social practice. Their work explores the intersections of healing\, ecology\, social justice\, and spirituality. Simiya’s expansive creative practice ranges from digital illustration\, designing and painting murals to experimental sound healing performances. \nDr. Timothy Huffman (he/him) is an associate professor at Saint Louis University in the department of Communication. His work explores how communication—such as compassion\, community\, and collaboration—can contribute to more just societies. He is the author of the book Qualitative Inquiry for Social Justice which focuses on how research and inquiry can play a role in fostering more inclusive\, humane\, and equitable community life. ​

DESCRIPTION:Birthplace of Creativity is a series of collaborative programs activating sites throughout the city referenced in Chambers’ exhibition\, including the St. Louis Public Library and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Dominic’s contemplative yet vibrant works reflect on how these institutions sparked wonder in him as a child. Through these programs\, viewers of all ages are invited to be similarly inspired. The special First Friday programming concludes at CAM with a guided tour\, music\, and art activities. \nThe self-guided audio tour of Dominic Chambers: Birthplace\, produced by CAM’s podcast-in-residence Speak Up St. Louis\, can be enjoyed at any time. \nSchedule of events:  \n\n10:30–11:30 am: Storytime at St. Louis Public Library’s Central Library\n\nParents are invited to bring their children to a special gathering for songs\, stories\, and activities about art and color inspired by Dominic Chambers. Ideal for children 6 years and under.  \n\n4:30–5:30 pm: Conversation at the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM)\n\nHear from the artist and Simon Kelly\, SLAM curator of modern and contemporary art\, about the works on view at SLAM that inspired a young Chambers during a visit to the museum on an elementary school field trip. \n\n5–9 pm: First Friday at CAM\n\nVisitors will be treated to a guided tour of Birthplace\, an invitation from Camp Sun Splash to create designs for a Fairground Park playground\, and an art activity led by Robert Sralla—Dominic Chambers’s former art teacher at Hazelwood East High School. DESCRIPTION:CAM and The Luminary team up for the third season of The Luminary’s popular seminar series\, Emerge. The workshops\, produced with local leaders in the field\, are practical and directly applicable to artists in the early stages of their careers. She is a graduate of Washington University\, where she majored in Art History and Urban Studies.

DESCRIPTION:CAM is pleased to partner with the annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival to present films that explore the world of contemporary art through a cinematic lens. This special program of short films celebrates the power of creative expression to shape representations of Latinx communities. As a complement to Ruta Madre\, Justin Favela’s large-scale mural at CAM\, these films also critique cultural stereotypes and public memory in order to create meaningful dialogue around what it means to be Latinx in the US. In particular\, these films use a range of formats—including comedy\, magical realism\, and documentary styles—to amplify how Latinx artists and directors help us to see and shape the world in which we live. \nThis event is free and open to the public and includes complimentary popcorn and refreshments for purchase. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Click here to register. \nIn Tow (2023)\, directed by Sharon Arteaga. 20 min. \nA self-involved teen and her overworked single mom confront their differences as their mobile home is towed away…with them inside of it! \nBertie The Brilliant (2023)\, directed by Gabriela Garcia Medina. 24 min. \nA young boy takes on chores and small jobs around his neighborhood to raise money for a ticket to a magic show; but when his grandmother loses her job\, he is faced with a difficult decision. \nThe Eye Begins in the Hand (2023)\, directed by Yehuda Sharim. 15 min. \nThe Eye Begins in the Hand (“El Ojo Comienza En La Mano”) is a tribute to campesino histories in rural California through the artwork of Ruben A. Sanchez\, an artist largely absent from critical conversations on Chicanx art. The film offers an unsentimental reckoning with the fate of many cultural workers that struggle between paying rent and/or creative endeavors. \nThe Great Wall of Los Angeles (1978)\, directed by Donna Deitch. 9 min. \nDocumentary short by Donna Deitch about the painting of the Great Wall of Los Angeles\, a cultural landmark and the longest mural in the world at 2\,754 feet. It is located in the San Fernando Valley and was produced under the direction of Professor Judith Baca\, co-founder of the Social Public Art and Resource Center (SPARC)\, along with Deitch and Christina Schlesinger. Justin Favela’s exhibition at CAM\, Ruta Madre\, references portions of The Great Wall of Los Angeles.

The film is shot from the perspective of filmmaker Adamu Chan\, who was incarcerated at San Quentin during the height of the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. \nMaster of Light (2022)\, directed by Rosa Ruth Boesten\, 85 min. \nGeorge Anthony Morton\, a classical painter who spent ten years in federal prison\, travels to his hometown to paint his family members. Going back forces George to face his past in his quest to rewrite the script of his life.
