SUMMARY:Saint Louis University Theatre & Dance Presents Dreaming of Lear
DESCRIPTION:Dreaming of Lear is a multi-media reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy filtered through the unconscious. It is a work of devised theatre in which participating artists reconstruct the play based on dreams they have while listening to recordings of King Lear. The production the audience experiences consists of recorded interviews with the ensemble of dreamers\, fragments of Shakespeare’s King Lear\, and the realization of the ensemble’s dreams on stage. Dreaming of Lear is created in collaboration with Prison Performing Arts’ Alumni Company.

DESCRIPTION:WRENS By Anne V. McGravie Directed by Trish Brown Trigger Warning: This show contains frank discussions of rape and abortion in the 1940’s. While neither of these events are depicted on stage\, this subject matter is a part of the play. Synopsis WRENS explores the relationships between seven young English\, Welsh\, Irish and Scottish women living together in a Nissan Hut on a British Naval Base in the Orkney Islands while serving in the Women’s Royal Navy Service (WRNS) during WWII. “On the eve of VE Day\, seven women sharing a barrack fight inner conflicts centering on emotional growth\, loss of innocence\, and biting questions about their responsibility toward others. Each is forced to examine her own self-absorption\, morality\, and petty prejudices when one wren is raped and faced with the life and soul-threatening choices of what to do about her subsequent pregnancy. Regardless of the changes at hand\, these courageous but fallible souls downplay the tragedy and self-pity in favor of a reluctant kind of bonding—making them more flesh-and-blood real than inaccessibly heroic.” (New City) “By the end of the gently feminist two-hour drama\, these clearly defined young women are vividly etched. McGravie wisely lets the issues in her play (women’s roles in the armed forces\, abortion\, class-based politics) slowly emerge from what appears to be the genuine interaction of character.” (Chicago Tribune)

SUMMARY:An Evening with Daniel Champagne in St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:If you’re wondering what Australian singer\, songwriter and one-of-a-kind guitar virtuoso Daniel Champagne did after his 44-city US tour over the summer of 2022\, he proceeded immediately to Canada for 30 mostly sold-out shows and then to New Zealand for another 30 mostly sold-out shows.  There’s a Christmas break\, and then a monumental tour of Australia. Obviously the best word to describe Daniel is “relentless”. Daniel will bring his tour back to America starting in mid-July 2023 and continuing through October for an even more ambitious 50 shows! He’ll return to many venues he performed in 2022\, and will be adding new shows in places he hasn’t performed in many years. One reviewer recently wrote “Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne must be seen to be believed’ The story goes that Daniel first picked up his instrument of choice as a 5-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing the dynamic live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school\, turned professional and hit the road without looking back. The following decade saw him release 5 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe with upwards of 300 shows per year\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela. In early 2020 as the COVID pandemic ground all touring to a halt\, Daniel returned to Australia writing music and further honing his craft and returned to international audiences with a swag of new songs and a complete new live show. His current release\, “Shimmer Through The Windscreen” is making waves on the streaming services and promises great critical acclaim once it is circulated to the media. DESCRIPTION:Since 2016\, Brothers Lazaroff has bent their catalog of original music once a year into a sub-genre that has become known as “Laz Jazz”.  This year the brothers are taking that concept further\, bringing friends from the St. Louis music scene for the inaugural “Laz Jazz Fest\,” to be held at the Grandel Theater and Dark Room on Saturday\, July 15th. Proceeds benefit St. Louis Art Place Initiative’s mission to build wealth and equity for low to moderate-income artists through homeownership. For the inaugural Laz Jazz Fest\, Brothers Lazaroff called upon their extended musical family and some St. Louis musical artists they have long admired to fill out the festival lineup.  Serving as special guest MC’s and performers are long-time collaborators Elizabeth McQueen\, who DJ’s at KUTX in Austin\, TX and Thelonius Kryptonite\, who relocated from St. Louis to New Orleans and now hosts a radio show at the storied WWOZ.  McQueen\, a grammy-nominated vocalist from Austin TX\, toured with the legendary band Asleep at the Wheel for a decade. Laz Jazz Fest will take place on the inside stages of The Grandel Theater and The Dark Room with acts Blvck Spvde and The Cosmos\, Anita Jackson\, David Gomez\, Mo Egeston All-Stars\, KBA (Kaleb Kirby\, Bob DeBoo\, Adam Maness)\, Joey Ferber\, DJ Nune\, DJ Boogieman\, and DJ Black Sun playing high energy sets in both rooms. On the outside patio of the Grandel The Heal Center for the Arts Jazz Camp will host a youth stage\, with performers ranging in elementary school age through high school. Laz Jazz Fest food will be available\, and more partnering organziations to be annouced. As they warm up and talk about life\, the girls navigate the politics of their personal lives as well as the politics of the larger world\, gossiping about things like war\, menstrual products\, genocide\, sports\, pop culture\, and their relationships. Each team member struggles to negotiate her individuality while being a part of a group. They bond over a bag of orange slices and personal traumas. The team seems as if it may disband after the sudden death of one of the girls\, but they manage to come together. In the end\, the surviving team players prepare to play yet another game together – closer\, stronger\, wiser\, and fiercer.

The play follows Liz\, a native New Yorker forced to relocate to the Texas Hill Country for her husband’s job.
