DESCRIPTION:Brothers Lazaroff will once again bend its catalog of original music into the exploratory sub-genre known as “Laz Jazz” at the 2nd Annual Laz Jazz Fest on Saturday\, June 29\, beginning at 4 p.m. (doors open at 3 p.m.) at The Big Top. In its second year\, Laz Jazz Fest will expand its footprint with two large\, outdoor stages and welcome the legendary avant garde jazz group Sun Ra Arkestra\, in addition to the Brothers’ extended musical family of some of St. Louis’ top musical artists. \nSun Ra founded the Sun Ra Arkestra in Chicago in the mid-1950’s and was among the earliest pioneers of the synthesizer and the free jazz revolution of the 1960’s. Following his legacy\, the Sun Ra Arkestra is known worldwide for live shows that combine big-band swing\, space-age jazz\, singing\, dancing\, chanting and Afro-pageantry. The Arkestra has been at the forefront of Afro-futurism since its inception\, recording over 100 albums. Blvck Spvde and The Cosmos will host the new Cosmos Tent\, a second stage next to The Big Top programmed by St. Louis great Blvck Spvde and bandmate Joey Ferber. This year’s festival marks the one-year anniversary of the collaboration between Brothers Lazaroff and the Cosmos\, who co-headlined last year’s Laz Jazz Fest. Blvck Spvde and the Cosmos are co-producers of this year’s festival\, curating their own lineup of music to perform between main stage acts. “After our hugely successful inaugural festival\, we wanted to make the most of the momentum\, and Brothers Lazaroff continued to collaborate with The Cosmos throughout last year on different projects. When it came to planning this year’s Laz Jazz Fest\, it seemed only right that we partner on the sophomore event\,” said David Lazaroff. “The Cosmos Tent will feature the different artists who make up the Cosmos as well as some extended family of the Cosmos network\, who are putting in the good work in other cities around the country.”   The full lineup of Laz Jazz Fest performers includes: Sun Ra Arkestra Brothers Lazaroff ft. DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of musical influences and sources that Daniel Donato has drawn on during his career and that inform Reflector (Retrace Music)\, the Nashville guitarist-singer-songwriter-band leader’s first all-original album. But within those Donato has carved out a unique and individualized spot for himself\, one that speaks to the deep American music heritage that inspires him — and that he’s pushing towards the future with inspired\, intentional vigor. \nHe calls it Cosmic Country\, a moniker that’s both self-descriptive and a statement of purpose. It’s an organic rock band aesthetic with plenty of roadhouse twang\, a showcase for Donato’s instrumental virtuosity and facility for melodically infectious songcraft. Bridging Nashville and the Great West\, Kentucky and mid-60s northern California\, tie-dye and plaid\, it’s a world of his own\, and wide world of musical adventure at that. “I think Cosmic Country is a tale as old as time\, really\,” Donato explains. “It’s yin and yang in a musical form. It’s three chords and the truth\, and then on the other side it’s exploration and bravery. I really went through a lot of years of grinding\, and still am\, to achieve this sound which is a vehicle for my personality\, and the personality is a vehicle for my soul. So (Reflector) is more that than any other record I ever put out.” Reflector’s 15 songs offer 66 minutes of ecstatic musical immersion. It’s an album in the classic sense of the word\, tracks that are individually memorable but sound even better coming one after the other and make the sum greater than the total of its parts. “We’re touching on a lot with this record\, which is also why there’s so many songs on it\,” acknowledges Donato\, whose stinging Fender Telecaster tone is the strongest glue of continuity throughout — and is positively screaming on tracks such as “Gotta Get Southbound” and “Dance in the Desert Pt. 2.” “If you’re the kind of person who wants to listen to a record and have a record be a companion with you\, then Reflector is going to vibrate in your frequency.” Donato’s own musical frequency was tuned at a young age\, while growing up in Nashville. His father “picked around a guitar a small bit;” more importantly\, he instilled in his son a discerning taste for quality music\, filling his son’s ears with legendary music of all genres. The rock meanwhile\, came from Guitar Hero; the game was crucial to broadening Donato’s vistas of listening to JImi Hendrix\, Eric Clapton\, Jimmy Page\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, et al\, as well as a particular attraction to Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City. “Those players stuck with me and gave me my first foundation of guitar\,” says Donato\, whose father taught him his first chords on one of his old guitars. “I was a strange kid — still am a strange person. I really didn’t have any friends that got me\, but the guitar understood me\, and I had a vision for what my life could be.” It was Papa Donato who suggested the fledgling and industriously minded (even at just 14) artist start busking in Nashville’s lower Broadway area and outside concerts\, for eight hours at a time on the weekends. After one of those sessions the two happened by Robert’s Western World\, a legendary honky-tonk where local mainstay the Don Kelly Band was onstage – which was also Donato’s first time playing a Telecaster\, through a Fender amplifier no less. “I played country songs and fell in love with it\,” says Donato\, who became a member of the band\, playing four hours a night at Robert’s (464 shows in total). “Their songbook was that of my main influences still to this day — Merle Haggard\, Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings\, Bob Wills\, Marty Robbins\, Bill Monroe\, traditional bluegrass music\, Hank Williams Sr. — old-timey music with real stories and emotions that everybody has. It just hooked me right away.” Another piece of the puzzle came through later in Donato’s teenage years — the Grateful Dead\, thanks to a high school American History teacher who gave him a pile of bootleg recordings when he was 18. “When I discovered Jerry Garcia\, there’s really never been anyone who writes like that\,” says Donato. “From there I went on to discover Bob Dylan and all the great writers and made me want to make that part of what I did as well.” The whole package of player\, singer\, writer and band leader was in place when Donato began working on his own during 2018. It was on display via his first album\, A Young Man’s Country in 2020 but refined on Reflector\, which features all original songs and finds Donato and his band – Nathan Aronowitz (keyboards/vocals)\, Will McGee (bass/vocals) and Noah Miller (drums and percussion) –honed from playing more than 200 shows during 2022\, after the Covid lockdowns had lifted. That allowed Donato to not just play again but also to road test the songs that would comprise the album and expand the audience. “We were home for less than two weeks between January and September of 2022\,” says Donato. “There was the existential necessity of going through a staggering amount of growth. All those shows and all those hours of experience really curated my values as an artist. That informed my composition\, informed my band-leading…everything that goes into making music that has real value and impact.” Donato had good help in achieving that on Reflector; he enlisted producer Vance Powell\, a six-time Grammy Award winner whose eclectic resume ranges from Chris Stapleton and Martina McBride to Phish and Clutch to Buddy Guy and the Jack White universe of the White Stripes\, the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather. They’d actually met when Donato was a teen playing at Robert’s\, and he remembers Powell telling him that “one day you’re gonna make a record\, and I want to work with you\,” which made him the perfect candidate to help Donato achieve his far-reaching vision this time out. “Vance was on damn near every record I enjoyed\,” he  notes. “He seemed like the only logical choice to take a band that has country songs and old-timey folky songs that also jams and organize it into a digestible piece.” It’s hard to find a more concise summation of Reflector than that. It kicks off with the joyous Southern rock roll of “Lose Your Mind\,” a sound echoed in other tracks — especially the harmony-laden “High Country” — and gets high ‘n’ lonesome on “Halfway in Between.” “Double Exposure’s” slinky funk is accented by dueling guitar lines\, while “Half Moon Night” and the instrumental “Sugar Leg Rag” feel like a contemporary incarnation of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys. “Gotta Get Southbound\,” weighing in at nearly eight minutes\, dances through its ebb and flow dynamics\, and “Faded Lovin’” echoes the organic majesty of The Band. Donato and company get their cosmic on with both hip-swaying parts of “Dance in the Desert” — one more acoustic\, the other a trippy electric opus — and the richly melodic odyssey “Weathervane.” Reflector — which features Nashville pedal steel legend Paul Franklin on four tracks  — also reflects “the work I did on myself and the work I did on my art” during the past three years\, according to Donato. “I really started discovering new psychological and ritual domains I wasn’t really aware of\,” he explains. “The whole concept of Reflector is of a duality. The entire world that you see externally is a reflection of your internal world\, so you have this internal world you exist in and this external world you exist in\, and that’s what this work is about. I like dualities; it allows me to see where each side of the fence post is\, and I can paint in the middle.” \nThe middle of anything has never sounded as engrossing and beguiling as Donato makes it on Reflector. These are songs that prompt a listener to hit “repeat” and that stick with you long after they’ve finished playing. DESCRIPTION:Houndmouth is an American alternative blues band from New Albany\, Indiana formed in 2011\, consisting of Matt Myers (guitar\, vocals)\, Zak Appleby (bass\, vocals)\, and Shane Cody (drums\, vocals).Houndmouth formed in the summer of 2011. After playing locally in Louisville and Indiana\, they performed at the SXSW music festival in March 2012 to promote their homemade self-titled EP. Geoff Travis\, the head of Rough Trade was in the audience and offered a contract shortly after. In 2012\, the band was named “Band Of The Week” by The Guardian. In 2013 Houndmouth’s debut album\, From the Hills Below the City\, was released by Rough Trade. This led to performances on Letterman\, Conan\, World Cafe\, and several major festivals (ACL\, Americana Music Festival\, Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Newport Folk Festival). SPIN and Esquire.com named Houndmouth a “must-see” band at Lollapalooza\, and Garden & Gun said\, “You’d be hard pressed to find a more effortless\, well-crafted mix of roots and rock this year than the debut album from this Louisville quartet.” On their new album Good For You\, Houndmouth share a collection of songs set in places as far-flung as the Alamo and the Hudson River\, each populated by a motley cast of characters: fairy-tale princesses and vampires\, parking-lot lovers and wanna-be beauty queens. The fourth full-length from the Indiana-bred band—vocalist/guitarist Matthew Myers\, drummer/vocalist Shane Cody\, and bassist/vocalist Zak Appleby—the result is a lovingly gathered catalogue of those wild and fleeting moments that stay lodged in our hearts forever\, taking on a dreamlike resonance as years go by. Produced by Brad Cook (Waxahatchee\, Hiss Golden Messenger) and mixed by Jon Ashley (The War on Drugs\, B.J. Barham)\, Good For You came to life at Houndmouth’s longtime headquarters\, a 19th-century shotgun-style house decked out in gold wallpaper and crystal chandeliers. “It was my grandparents’ place\, and after they passed we kept it the exact same\, full of all their old stuff\,” Cody explains. Over the course of a year spent holed up at the so-called Green House\, Houndmouth slowly shaped the warm and unhurried sound of Good For You. “Except for the first EP we’d never recorded in our own space before\,” says Myers. “It was perfect because we all felt so comfortable\, and there were no time constraints on anything.” In a departure from the shambolic spirit of past work like Little Neon Limelight (Houndmouth’s 2015 breakout\, featuring the platinum-selling “Sedona”)\, Good For You bears a hi-fi minimalism that beautifully illuminates its finespun storytelling. “From working with Brad and Jon we learned to go for the simplest parts that best support the melody\, and to let the frequencies take up more space in the songs\,” says Myers. On the album-opening title track\, Houndmouth bring that approach to a sweetly languid breakup song set against the surreal backdrop of the Kentucky Derby (“I wrote that before Covid\, but at the time I was sort of emotionally going through a pandemic\,” Myers points out). On “Miracle Mile\,” Houndmouth pay homage to the many misfits they’ve met on the road\, including a woman they’ve nicknamed after the Greek god of wine and ritual madness (“Sweet Dionysus/She never really liked us/Hangs on and stays too long/And then supplies us all with vices”). One of the most heavy-hearted moments on Good For You\, “McKenzie” looks back on an ex-girlfriend of Cody’s and spins a tender portrait of wasted longing (“Everybody’s coming over/To smoke and go nowhere/Once a steady conversation/Just a bunch of hot air”). And on “Cool Jam\,” Houndmouth eulogize a doomed romance\, embedding their lyrics with so much broken wisdom (e.g.\, “Ain’t no heaven when you’re having a good time”). On its closing track “Las Vegas\,” Good For You shifts into a far rowdier mood\, offering up a freewheeling anthem that once again reveals Houndmouth’s ability to build a novel’s worth of tension in just a few lines (“You wore makeup for three days straight/Half a Xanax for the holidays/By the look on your face/You’re rolling eights the hard way”). Working from a demo they’d laid down years before\, the band produced “Las Vegas” on their own in the frenetic final session for the album. “We had a mic at one end of the hallway\, and we were all just screaming the harmonies together from the other end\,” Myers notes. In assembling the tracklist for Good For You\, Houndmouth nearly withheld the song due to its outlier status\, but ultimately found its joyfully unhinged energy well-suited to a world waking up from a year of grief and isolation. “I love how you can hear the difference between Brad really anchoring us down on all the rest of the album\, and then the chaos of us handling that one ourselves\,” says Cody. For Houndmouth\, the making of Good For You allowed for a major leap forward in their songwriting and sound while recalling the pure abandon of the band’s early days. “I remember the first time I ever came to the Green House and saw what was happening here and I thought\, ‘I’m never leaving this place\,’” says Myers\, who met Appleby and Cody in high school and started collaborating with them in college. “This album felt like being back in that time again\, only now everything’s a little more dialed-back and cared-for. DESCRIPTION:Circles Around The Sun’s fourth studio album traverses towards galaxies unknown – Language is the sound of a rock band rebounding from unthinkable adversity\, moving as one to confidently author their next chapter. Synth-drenched excursions into outer-spatial sound design\, the six-song release welcomes guitarist John Lee Shannon to the fold\, a longtime peer and tourmate who joins bassist Dan Horne\, keyboardist Adam MacDougall\, and drummer Mark Levy. The forthcoming release builds on the cosmic-disco vibe of 2020’s eponymous LP. The Floydian tongues on Language represent a new dawn\, as evidenced by an ethereal title-track featuring harpist Mikaela Davis. The new material finds them oscillating through hybrid strains of disco-funk\, soul jazz\, and psychedelic rock\, harnessing their stylistic lanes into a singular\, intoxicating brew. “We had been partying on other planets for a while when we found our new guy John Lee Shannon. We all got in the studio and played disco ball dodgeball for a while and this is what we came up with. There’s a bit of a different arc to Language. The first couple songs are gonna put you in a certain headspace\, and then the party happens later on\,” notes bassist Dan Horne on the creation of the new record. The band immersed themselves in sound design research at Horne’s Echo Park studio\, Liberty Hair Farm. Longtime creative partners dove into exploration mode\, probing the limitless potential of an arsenal of synthesizers\, sequencers\, and other vintage electronic instrumentation. The Wall Street Journal and CMT premiered tracks from the album that since garnered much critical acclaim. \n“Outstanding taste in songwriting as well as a soul-marinated voice.”\n– Rolling Stone \nSyracuse native Sexton got his start singing in the streets and subways of Boston in the early 90’s. Still fiercely independent and headlining venues from The Fillmore to Carnegie Hall\, he has influenced a generation of contemporary artists. His songs have appeared in television series such as Scrubs\, Parenthood\, Masters of Sex and in numerous films\, though it’s his incendiary live show\, honest lyrics\, and vocal prowess that keep fans coming back for more. \n\nCelebrate live arts & culture safely at The Big Top!
