ST. LOUIS, MO (April 22, 2025) – Grand Center Inc. (GCI) announces the launch of an innovative public art project that will transform electrical boxes along Grand Avenue into vibrant works of art. Three local artists have been selected to paint electrical boxes at key intersections within Grand Center Arts District, bringing color and creativity to previously overlooked infrastructure.
The project, funded through a grant from the Grand Center Community Improvement District, builds upon GCI’s successful 2022 initiative that saw 75 fire hydrants throughout the District painted by local artists. This new phase focuses on electrical boxes, with plans to eventually paint approximately ten boxes throughout the district. “Beautification of Grand Center Arts District has always been a cornerstone of our mission,” said Peg Weathers, President and CEO of Grand Center Inc. “This public art project not only beautifies our streets but also supports local artists while reinforcing the identity of Grand Center as the hub of arts and culture in St. Louis.”
A Public Art Committee comprising representatives from the District’s major cultural institutions, including the Angad Arts Hotel St. Louis, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Kranzberg Arts Foundation, Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Saint Louis University, and The Sheldon, selected three artists from numerous submissions: Taylor Marrie, Amy S. Miller of Miller Art Creative, and Kiki Salem. Their designs were chosen for their artistic merit, connection to the District’s creative spirit, and ability to capture the vibrancy of St. Louis’ arts community. One of the artworks will honor jazz legend Miles Davis, ahead of the celebration of his 100th birthday next year.
The selected locations include electrical boxes at Grand and Washington, Grand and Olive, and Grand and Delmar. Work on the boxes is scheduled to begin the week of April 21st and be completed within 2-4 weeks, weather permitting. The public is encouraged to watch the transformation in progress and engage with the artists during the installation period.
