ST. LOUIS, MO – Grand Center Inc. will honor former St. Louis Mayor and longtime civic leader Vince Schoemehl at its annual gala, “A Grand Celebration,” on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at The Coronado. Presented by the Steward Family Foundation, the evening will celebrate Schoemehl’s extraordinary civic leadership, nearly six decades of service to St. Louis and his enduring impact on the Grand Center Arts District.
Schoemehl, the 42nd Mayor of the City of St. Louis and former President and CEO of Grand Center Inc., has been one of the region’s most active civic leaders and a longtime champion for the future of the city. Throughout his career, he has mentored leaders, opened doors, championed important causes and played an influential role in shaping St. Louis.
“Vince’s commitment to St. Louis and to Grand Center has left an extraordinary and lasting impact on our city,” said Peg Weathers, President and CEO of Grand Center Inc. “His vision and leadership helped shape not only the Grand Center Arts District, but the broader St. Louis community. We are honored to celebrate his remarkable legacy and nearly six decades of service to the city he has dedicated so much of his life to strengthening.”
Schoemehl served three terms as Mayor of St. Louis from 1981 to 1993. During his tenure, he led efforts focused on neighborhood revitalization, economic development, historic preservation and public-private partnerships. He also created the Regional Arts Commission and the Convention and Visitors Commission, two institutions that continue to serve the St. Louis region today.
His commitment to the city continued through nearly 15 years as President and CEO of Grand Center Inc., from 2001 to 2015. During his tenure, Grand Center Inc. created the Grand Center TIF District, helping spur investment in the district over the following decades. His leadership helped establish Grand Center as a nationally recognized arts and entertainment district and a cornerstone of the region’s cultural vitality.
The 2026 Gala will be chaired by J. Joe Adorjan, Lawrence H. Biondi, S.J., and Nancy and Ken Kranzberg, with Charlie Brennan serving as emcee. The evening will feature special performances and a celebration of Schoemehl’s lifetime of service to the City of St. Louis and his lasting contributions to Grand Center.
The celebration begins at 6:00 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a pre-program reception, followed by the main program at 7:00 p.m. A post-program celebration will take place from 8:15 to 10:00 p.m. Food stations, passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be offered throughout the reception portions of the evening, with seating available throughout the venue. Cocktail attire is preferred.
Grand Center Inc.’s work extends beyond individual arts and cultural institutions to the shared infrastructure and coordination that connects the district. Through convening, infrastructure stewardship and public advocacy, the organization supports a district encompassing more than 60 arts organizations, businesses, schools and community spaces.
